After a day at anchor in Studland on saturday, where I think I saw that Tom Cunliffe guy on his boat (I'd post the pics, but........ /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) we had a bash out in Poole bay this morning, and were treated to the sight below....... though they didn't start the highline transfer till well past, so missed that chance.

I think I also waved at "Ladyinbed" going the other way....... but didn't take a pic as I'd just clouted my partner on the head with the camera. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd say at the closest they were 200 yards away. We'd spotted the lifeboat and an ILB coming out from Poole, and saw them messing around off Bournemouth. Not long after that, India Juliet flew along the coast from Sandbanks, and then chased the lifeboat out towards Old Harry. We were headed in the other direction......

Was climbing at Anvil Point this afternoon, surprised at the amount of boats motoring east with such a fine broad reach! Started getting very lumpy this evening!

T'is great to overtake them under sail though.....

Yeah there's more horses in a f4/5 broad reach under sail than there is in the average lump of iron in the average sailboat!

Re: Lifeboat & India Juliet pics.....

Not sure for a moment I disturbed his peace.......... just took a few pictures of a beautiful boat and her crew getting under way.

Certainly, the photos don't show anything that haven't been seen before in other places, or anything that anyone could consider embarrassing or un-flattering.

However, one objection is one too many..... so I've removed the pics. P'raps you might think I should remove the photos of the lifeboat and IJ too, as surely the same would apply........ but I'll leave them for now.

Anyone who wants to see Mr. Cunliffe and his boat "Westernman" might enjoy his website...... Tom Cunliffe.com

Yes, Fri night at Studland, a beat down towards Swanage then a run up to Lymington on Sat. Had the (little) wind on the nose motoring back on Sun, where we saw the same lifeboat / IJ antics, on our way back to Studland to wait for the tide for Wareham.
A lovely w/e + mackerel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Lifeboat & India Juliet pics.....

Hi Rusty,my sincerest apologies. I think i could have worded that- er- better.
They are indeed super sharp pics of a beautiful vessel and I am sure that the owner accepts his higher- than- average profile as a small price for being able to write so much.....just glad I suppose that there are no 'tinternet pics of myself plodding along under motor-they would need photoshopping to remove the trailing lines, badly stowed sails and washing drying in the rigging ..probably !

Re: Lifeboat & India Juliet pics.....

Blueboatman..... Apology accepted. I did note the time of your comment, and having worked shifts for many years I know that at time of morning, what's said is not always what one would say at a more sociable hour.

I did almost respond in a similar way, but I'm nice and mellow as I'm off to La Rochelle in a couple of days time (not on my Jaguar 25, I hasten to add...) for a week of relaxation.

As for photos..... I wouldn't dream of taking shots of another boater relaxing on board, let alone post them here unless I'd either asked first, or knew them well. When I came into Studland on Saturday, there were quite a few "classic" boats there, and a couple more under sail. I wish I'd taken some photos of them, but was busy flaking out chain etc and missed the chance. Ah well.......

I didn't realise at first the boat I photographed was Mr. Cunliffes'..... it was only after looking at the pics full size and seeing the name, and then Googling that, that all became clear. Having watched the BBC series "Island Race" many years ago, and having seen him often in the yachting presss, and having at least 2 of his books onboard the boat, I surmised that the pics might be of interest to others after all, especially as none of his crew were in frame.

Having said that though, many of the most popular threads on here are ones with boaty photos in...... and I dare say quite a few are posted without the owners knowledge or consent.

In my original post, I did mention I'd taken said photos, and only posted them in response to Danny...... who for all I know, may be Mr Cunliffe in real life.! Having read your original comment, I almost thought that you were instead...... but I stand corrected. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Happy sailing!

First two seemed a bit oversharpened for my tastes, but the last shot is superb - I love it.

Have to agree with you about the over-sharpening..... I'd messed with my screen resolution on friday, and used Photoshop to re-size and save for web using those new settings. I'm now trying to get things back to how they were on thursday!

Glad the LB and IJ shots have been recieved so well. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Lifeboat & India Juliet pics.....

I am intrigued. On the older large lifeboats (Aruns and Severns) there is a nice big area to winch a man down onto. From the pics, it seems that there is very little room, especially if a stretcher is involved. Has anyone been on this one and is there space? If not, what were the RNLI thinking?
