Life raft mounting

Have returned from a frustrating afternoon, albeit in beautiful sunshine, at the boat.

We bought a raft in canister at LIBS which arrived last week, which included the cradle. Spent ages trying to decipher the instructions which seem to have been translated from French to English by a Chinaman. I wanted to mount it on the pushpit so that SWMBO can launch it on her own, if I am incapacitated.

Having lost at least 3 of the nuts over the side, along with my favourite screwdriver which I bought to repair my Ford Anglia at the age of 17, I finally decided I didn't want it on the rail after all. I am concerned that the stanchions will not take the weight, particularly in rough sea. So my next plan is to deck mount it just forward of the mast. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't do this?

During all this I walked along the pontoon to see how other boats have theirs. The only one on the pushpit was a grubby looking Benny 331 - the life raft shows the next service being due in March 2002 - Rather surprising, particularly as the skipper calls himself a yachtmaster!

Finally, I have another raft on board which accompanied a crew member when we went to Cherbourg last May. He loaned it to us as his own boat was having the decks re-teaked at the time. He seems to have disappeared, maybe emigrated, or set off across the channel and hasn't got there yet! What am I offered?

I had a similar experience last year which resulted in an embarassing trip over the side in wet suit to recover the bits that fell off whilst trying to fix the thing to the pushpit. Doh!
I spose fix it ashore or from a dinghy where the bits will fall somewhere retrievable.
Ours is now mounted in front of the mast...

Is there sufficient space to mount it on the stern cabin coachroof ?I would have thought it would be easier to launch here than on the foredeck?

I will be mounting my new can on the pushpit before launching (at least Ill try to do it before going in the water given your experience with losing bits over the side!).
Trouble with the foredeck is the hassle of going up there to get it and man-handling it over the side (m 4-man-can is damn heavy, if yours is a 6 I wouldnt liek to be lifting it over). It would possible be needed in rough weather which doesnt help.

Nick come on you have a big Moody & the pushpit steelwork is easily capable of taking a liferaft.
Have a look at Shadys setup

& she was just a 30'

Personally I would only mount a liferaft on the pushpit as its EASY to get to & when you need to use it. you want a safe area to board from, maybe in a hurry. Your cockpit will be the easiest place!

re bits over the side...I know its a pain but I assume you are trying to screw a bolt onto a nut, if so get hold of some molegrips and tie a lanyard onto them (tie loose end to boat) use them to grip the nut...&... voila, no lost nuts (metal kind that is!)

try again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Would it be possible to fit it on the pushpit as you intended and if needed have a couple of extra stanchions made to take the extra weight ?

you could design them to be retro fitted with nuts and bolts to the existing pushpit without removing it?

PS order a few spare nuts and bolts...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OK Poter, you have talked me into giving it another go. Our cradle looks identical to yours.

I met forumite DaveyM (a Moboer) today, his boat being only two away from ours. He works for a boat builder and reckoned they put rafts on much lighter stanchions than ours.

Its just that the raft/canister weigh 25kgs, and I don't want any movement at the stanchion bases.

Our last boat had the life raft attached to the pushpit - in order to support the weight I had the bottom of the frame resting on the deck.

No room on current boat, and not overly happy with liferaft sitting on the coach roof - difficult to launch and exposed.

I would have another go, IMHO the pushpit is the only safe place to mount a liferaft where any member of crew can launch it. In the event of a serious cabin fire you may not be able to get to the coachroof and there is always the possibility it will get caught up in the halliards and kicking strap
