Looking to purchase a 150hp outboard and have been offered a 2011 mariner 150hp. Excellent condition, serviced annually. It has 2400 hours on it.

How many hours do these era outboards for without the need for repair/rebuild?

I have heard 3-5k averages depending on service, maintenance, cold - hot cycles, "fuel in" vs hours, environment, etc, and with plenty anecdotal evidence of this being a lot longer especially in commercial use. In the end it's how long is a piece of string. How good is the motor right now seems to be more relevant to the answer for your question.

2400 hours divided by 9 years = 266 hrs per year.

If its a 4 stroke the engine and gearbox oil is normally changed at 100 hrs so a service every 4 months or so is required.

If 2 stroke then just the gearbox oil is the crucial bit...

On the whole, a high hours outboard with regular servicing is better than a low hours one where they sit festering... My current boat had 186 hours on it over 12 years which isn't really enough. Servicing records mention oil emulsification and regular draining and refilling were required.

Since i have had it no problem with oil at all and another 186 hours put on in just 2 years!!

We had a Mariner 150hp Optimax, which we sold at 1300 hours and 14 years old. (we had it for 1,000 of those hours and 11 of the years).

It was super reliable and punched as strong as it ever did when we sold it. I was able to show the engine running on a full sea trial as we sold the engine whilst still attached to the boat (Scorpion 6.5m rib). First person to view snapped it up quickly!!

Can the Mariner you've been offered be seen running?

Thanks for the replies. It’s actually been found that it’s done 3000 hours. It has been serviced every year and was pulled 2 years ago for a replacement sump gasket and new trim motor. Been sitting in a workshop since as the owner needed a motor on the boat without delay.
Will come fully checked and with warranty.
Just wanted to put the feelers out on what was acceptable for the hours for one of these.

What is the selling price for the engine?

My estimate would be in the range £3 to 4 k......

For around £12k you could get a Honda 150 brand new (with a bit of discount haggling - I ended up with 25% off list price!!). Long warranty, DIY servicing allowed, bullet proof.

What boat are you thinking of fitting it to?
