Lidl Gas alarm

Just been there (Lido Alloa) and bought one. I am about to install the gas system.

From the spec it seems to draw a maximum current of 150mA.

This starts to be quite greedy (25Ah) for over a week without charging but should be fine.

I also bought a fire blanket for £7.99 as it is much more compact when packaged then the one I was going to fit.

Even better.

Just found out that the Lido fire blanket one does not have any metal eyelets pressed into it so it can be mounted near the compass.

If that's when it's actually sounding, then hopefully it won't draw that for a week.

Just been to Lidl's and bought one. Comparing it to the Compass one (£35-96 via internet plus p&p no doubt)........ the Compass one is model GA40 which has 2 lights (alarm & power), the Lidl one is model GA617 and has 3 lights (fault light plus others) so it would appear the Lidl unit is a later/better/updated model. Possibly........Erm, well you see what I'm getting at!

Just bought one at Lidl.Plugged in and turned on gas cooker (at home) what a LOUD !!! noise. Also worked when I sprayed some gas from the kitchen blowlamp.
Now I have to wire it into boat circuit. If I stopped doing all these jobs I might be able to go sailing.Waiting for a rainy windy day.

I just bought one of these and was mildly surprised that it doesn't have a remote sensor, if only because a Plastimo unit that I installed on a previous boat did have one. No problem, just need a bit more care in choosing where to install the box so it won't get kicked. Excellent buy for a tenner, anyway.

Re: Lidl Gas alarm / Current

Steve

I have now checked the actual current taken by my Lidl gas alarm at a supply voltage of 13.5 volts.

When the alarm is sounding the current was 100mA.

In the stand by condition the current was 66mA.

Thus in the standby condition the weekly consumption on my sensor will be aprox 11 Ampere hours from the battery.

Just about acceptable to me, I think.

Those are the figures for my specific sensor.

The sensors may all draw identical current, but as their maximum quoted current is 50% higher than I measured then perhaps with another sensor the standby current could also be 50% higher under different conditions of temperature, voltage etc. Giving 16.5 Ah for a week.

The biggest problem with them is that they have no remote sensor.
Because of this the unit itself must be mounted quite low in the boat and it then will become liable to suffer water damage.

I have mounted mine below the cooker about 4" above the saloon sole. Life is made up of compromises.

If the bilge water rose enough to swamp it the last thing I would be bothering about would be whether the gas sensor was working or not.

Re: Lidl Gas alarm / Current

I bought two - at that price why not? I figure if one malfunctions the other's a backup.

I'll eventually test them out to see if they detect petrol vapor too. I'll post the result here.

Anyone thought about doing a mod to make the sensor remote? Should be simple enough, and you can always test it's still working ok.

To go one step further; anyone know where you can purchase another sensor designed to be mounted way down below to replace the one already in there?

And while I'm asking, can anyone point me to a spark-free switch?

If you simply turn the gas off at the bottle you won't need to leave the alarm running all week. Always best to turn the gas off at the bottle when you leave the boat in any case.
