Lidl sold me a battery charger about 18mts ago. It says it has a 3 year guarantee.

I have never been totally happy with it and it often fails to charge. I took it back when they were on the shelves again and they said they could not exchange it, because it was over 12 mts old. They told me to return it to the "manufacturer".

What is my next move?

just forget it.... and buy a decent one. you pay for what you get in life... if it's 18 months old just buy a new one.......

buy a new one from lidl
put the old one in the new box & return it, dont forget to keep the receipt

Phone the Service Centre and arrange to send it back FOC. Nothing to lose but a few minutes of your time.

As others have said it's probably not worth the trouble - but;

12 months means nothing. You have 6 years (UK) to report an issue or fault that you believe to be inherent. You'd have to prove it though.. (Two years in much of Europe).

Products in Europe are guaranteed for a reasonable period of time and the re-seller is responsible as your contract is with them.

I had exactly the same issue with a bicycle pump I bought from Lidl. It disintegrated internally, through normal use. The checkout zombie insisted I had to return it to the manufacturer. I pointed out that my purchase was from Lidl, and it was Lidl's responsibility. The conversation became heated, and she called for the manager. The manager backed down, and gave me a full refund.

Lidl stores usually point you toward their customer service telephone number.
They, are particularly good at dealing with problems, perhaps putting you in contact (via them or DIY) with manufacturers.
Did this with a pair of their binoculars & they sent me a new pair, without argument.

Last time Aldi had a charger I thought it looked a good buy. It wasn't. Took it back and kept money in pocket and then bought decent charger.

My Lidl charger packed up (possibly due to misuse) so I wrote as instructed in the Warranty with a copy of the receipt and they sent me a new one foc without asking to see the defective one! I was quite happy with that and it's still going strong several years later.

I had an SDS drill from Lidl that we used to demolish some internal walls and only ever used it in hammer action. Wanted to drill a hole a few months later and it didn't rotate so phoned up the service number and after a few basic questions and checks they sent me a brand new one the next day and didn't want the old one back. Now have two - one for drilling and one for hammering!
