My friends father has a small speed boat on Lake Geneva he won't let her use it without a license, she is a British citizen living in Cumbria, would an ICC be sufficient. Where can she obtain one, from some where within a couple of hours drive from Kendal. I have a indorsed yacht master certificate for sail used to be a cruising instructor and used to be able to issue ICC certificates but I have not been teaching for several years, is it possible for me to issue her with one?
Regards mike

You will need to check with the Lake Geneva authorities what certification they require. Inland lakes vary and are not part of the CEVNI setup so doubt an ICC will be acceptable. You could try the RYA as they may have relevant information

A couple of years ago I posted a thread on here about trying to get the requisite licence for Bodensee (aka Lake Constance). There is a special licence for the lake, that includes a written exam. We were going to the German side, where that exam is only available in German (and my German doesn't extend beyond basic conversation). I could have gone to Switzerland and done it in French, but that was just too much hassle. So I didn't go sailing.

More recently, I discovered that the licence was not required to hire a boat for just a few days a year. It was only a requirement if you kept a boat there. I think that exemption is only for charter boats, and not if you borrow one from a friend.

I wouldn't be surprised if the rules for Lake Geneva are similar.

The ICC should allow your friend to charter a boat in all countries that have adopted UN Resolution 40, which includes Switzerland. In addition, Switzerland has endorsed the ICC amendment of special conditions of implementation by accepting that: "a person who is residing temporarily in Switzerland is authorized to operate a Swiss vessel as per Article 91 of the ordinance of 8 November 1978 on navigation on Swiss waterways".

So, if she can obtain one it should satisfy her father and any cantonal water police who may stop her afloat.

DIL has just got her lake licence. Apparently it's similar to getting a motor boat licence in France.
