Err how close to Darnah, the Libian Goverment never used to welcome visitors off their coast.
I used to work in Libya and in Tripoli there is a fairly serious Marina, full of what were some serious boats, eg Raggies up to about 45ft, stinkies around 40ft. All were badly knocked about and engines missing either in full or prt, but the majority had intact hulls and decks. One of the French guys I was mates with told me that one of the French had tried to repatriate a Yacht but failed, this would have been taken out on a ship.
This was in 1992.

AS a matter of interest, where was the marina? If it were more or less underneath the old Ottoman castle in Tripoli harbour, that would be on the site of the Tripoli Dolphin Yacht Club, where I learned to sail in RNSA 14's Fireflies and GP 14's in the early 1960's.

Well according to my electronic charts, minimum depth in the bouyed channel into the port is 14metres, but drops down pretty quickly to 50 metres then within 3/4 mile from the harbour entrance down to over 500 metres.

Oh and it's 165nM to Crete if that helps. Anything else you want to know?

No, it was further Eastwards along the coast by about 5 miles. By the race course and the Military Naval school & the Hospital. Most of the Boats were left by the departing Americans and other Serviceman. Their was even a travel host and all the other gear.
Not sure of a marina near the harbour, the main port is fairly close and gets in some fairly serious boats as well as the roach infested Tripoli-Malta ferry.
