Does anyone have any idea why LIBS had only a few yachts but a whole hall crammed with motorboats?

I only ask as with the red deisel battle being lost I would have expected mobo sales to have taken a major dive. Or are prospective mobo owners so rich it doesn't matter to them?

On the plus side, it was good to see some sensibly sized (under 35ft) yachts getting attention.

I would guess for the same reason that PBO has aquired Sprcialist Motorboat Pages but still doesn't have any pages soley designated for Sail.

Look at the number of new boat sales in each category. If your a sailor you don't stand a chance.

Well, by the time I pay my insurance, marina mooring fees and marine mortgage costs, an extra £100/month isn't going to stop me boating. I don't want to pay it (and will look to switch to 90% bio when red goes), but it wont stop me boat that's for sure. Might even still go bigger this year...

At the risk of getting flamed......
.....I think the Show is much improved this year. They've changed the layout and it has a much more open feel about it. Yes there are 35-40' benny/jenies there, in fact I thought there were more yachts than last year. More places to sit down, as well.
I went for 2 days (2 tickets!) and only thoroughly saw the hall with the yachts in, plus the electronics in the other hall. The place is so huge that if you wanted to look at the mobos as well (which I didn't) then I reckon you'd need 3 days total.
Car parking was a bit of a co**up, for some reason Excel weren't running the park and ride so parking for a day is up to 12 quid, but it was free for me on the first day because the machines all went wrong.

Beneteau were there as were Opal with Bavaria, Island packet and Legend. The Delpia 29 and 33 are outside and looked good. Off the top of my head the others I recall were;
Sunbeam, Macgregor 26, Cornish crabber and hunter, Pippin, Ovni, and probably more, plus some dinghies. There were probably more but nowhere near as many as there were mobos.

It was certainly a good day out and I managed to get a Green River knife and a few bits and pieces from the classic boats area plus it was handy to talk to manufacturers about reefing ideas, GPS problems, etc and compare products like flooring etc but I wouldn't go just as a shopping trip unless you're shopping for a boat.

I'm not trying to start a barney, it's just happened that way!

It just struck me as odd that there were so many very expensive mobos and relatively few yachts, that's all. It was a good show, nevertheless.

£12 quid park and ride? thats a bit of a hike over last year - was a fiver I think.

No, I said there was no park and ride, so the parking (under Excel) was £12. They are advertising a park and ride so I don't know what's happened to it.

As a MOBO owner it feels like all the other pages are devoted to sail /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Travel by train if coming from Suffolk. Special deal from Manningtree £24-20 Inc. tube. Change at Stratford. 4 can travel on two tickets, just over £12 per head.
All the usual suspects at the show, but didn't they look better in at Earls Court when they had masts?.
Newcomer for me which I liked was the Salona 37 (not in the show guide but on (I think) N202 Wittey Marine sales.
Unlike many in the Bendytoe etc ranges the underwater shape looked sleek. I think it is not by accident that you have a job to see the underwater profile of Bavarias as they sit in a waterline sea of carpet, where they can show off their very good accomodation but tend to be rather modest about their important curves.
Without going to racing extremes I think a good cruising boat should get from A to B whichever way the wind is without having to turn on the engine too often. Better handling and an easier helm normally goes with a boat designed with good sailing performance as a priority.
Funny how pompous and dogmatic one can get about boats that are bigger than I am ever likely to buy.

I must admit that I tend to get a bit dogmatic but I still believe that a good sea boat should have a long deep keel, a decent forefoot and a rudder hung on the back of the keel and be heavy displacement. Everything should be over engineered.

Having said that, most of us are going to spend our time pootling round the coast on nice weekends and a couple of weeks in summer, in (hopefully) decent weather with our families. The rest of the time the boat's going to sit in a marina somewhere.

Why have an ocean going yacht for coastal sailing?

The modern AWB doeas exactly what it says on the tin with the minimum maintainance.

Please don't misunderstand me. I can see what you mean.

PBO choose to highlight the Mobo Pages but do not show the same courtesey to Raggies.

There have been many comments regarding PBO losing it's way. This is hardly true but who can blame a publication driven by advertisers for chasing the main chance. More new Stinkies are bought than raggies after all.

FWIW, I was at the show for the build up and was offered a free ticket plus accomodatiom for Friday- I chose to go home. I might have stayed if I was interested in MOBOs.

I have not been a reader for that long, my wife started a subscription as a present just before we bough our boat. It felt like we have picked the wrong mag.

They dont really need special pages for raggies as all the pages are ususally for sail.

I dont think I have ever seen a MOBO on the cover, I just pulled one of last years out at random and looking through, there is only the dramatic danegrous story and a 1/4 page article on a new launch. The rest is all sail. All the practical bits are sail. So to have a bit especially for Sail would seem a bit a bit pointless.

I expect we are all a bit biased, I should change to a MOBO mag really, because yachts don't do it for me I cant find the back copy I am looking for by the front cover, as the front covers all look the same to me. I know to Raggies they are all totally different. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I guess with all mags there comes a time where they have told you all the basic stuff and they cant please as easily as in your novice days.

Being pedantic, it just gets up my nose that they emblason Mobo over some pages but us Raggies are considered so easy to please that we are not worth the consideration.

As a stick in the mud reader of many years I don't think they ever recovered from the loss of Geof Pack. James Jermain did a sterling job as fill in after his death. If James had been given the job of Editor I think we would have a much better mag now.

as someone that considers us mobo drivers as legalised hairdressers, drug sellers, and general whores, I take expection to your biased opinions. You stick in the mud!

PS I need someone to clean my front door step tomorrow, as some oik tradesman has left dirty footprints on it. Can you pop around please?
