With all the uncertainty around due to Red Decision, its ramifications etc, will LIBS be able to satisfy the exhibitors, that I read somewhere were "giving Excel one last year". I for one certainly wouldn't be making the decision to buy a new boat this show, even if I could. With talk of "20p" max from one educated source here and "only option road price for white" elsewhere the difference in running costs could be massive by the time one takes delivery??

How many of us forumites will visit and no matter how tempted, be keeping the wallet firmly shut? I was in the market to upgrade one or two instruments on Damn but if it does go up to 98p, even in 6 months it would impinge far too heavily on my ability to cruise, which is my passion, so would very likely look to sell rather than keep paying out to just "have a boat, for the hell of it." So Raymarine, Furono etc will definitely be one less sale this January. In fact although Fairline have sent us tickets it does make me wonder if it is really worth while going??

So let me get this straight. You think someone who's about to blow £200K on a new Sealine F34 (say) which will probably depriciate, what, £40K (20%) in the first year? Plus berthing and all the rest so prob £50K all in. They're gonig to say "ooohh, it's going to cost me another grand in diesel, I can't afford that"?

How

At boat show prices and the ****s who pay them, I doubt there will be any effect.
It is the chap who is thinking of buying his first, cheap, second hand boat and working out how much it will cost to run, and if he can afford it, who will be put off.
I helped man a boat show stand in 1997 and more than half of the first time potential buyers of new boats I talked to had never heard of red diesel.

ari, its about perception. Depreciation is only something you 'pay' if/when you sell your boat and berthing fees are a one off hit every year but fuel is something you put your hand in your pocket for every other weekend. So, hitting on your credit card for £700 of fuel every couple of weeks instead of £300 really demonstrates how expensive this hobby is. And for some peeps it will be the final straw breaking the camels back

I understand what you're saying, but honestly, the average new twin diesel boat buyer spending a six fig sum on a brand new boat isn't going to be put off by an extra couple of hundred quid at fill up time I promise you...

Yes but the average boater is NOT the average guy buying a new boat! they are a very small percentage of the boat fraternity! I have been boating 20+ years and from what I have observed the average boat owner buys a second hand boat and works his way up to a bigger second hand boat until perhaps when he is retiring age is perhaps able to afford something new!

With far less people able to afford to run a boat, less second hand boats will be sold, that means far fewer new boats will sell. For sure there will always be a small percentage of the market that can afford to come into boating and buy new straight away, but IMHO the majority of people work there way up over a period of years.

Make no mistake about this, if you own a motor cruiser right now it has suddenly been devalued!

Yes I for one will seriously consider giving it up, there's more things i want to spend my hard earned cash on other than suppporting this govt and its ever increasing taxes. 20 years of boating, yes i love it, it's been a way of life for me, but the cost will make me whince every time I want to go somewhere.

So the end of my boating days look to be approaching.

One door closes and no doubt another will open.

So everyone who buys a new boat is a ****? Someone who is successful and wants to spend some of his hard earned cash on a nice shiny new boat is automatically assumed to be something unprintable??

Well that's as may be but I'd rather drink my red than burn it.

Yes seriously I'm thinking of changing hobbies, I like to travel a fair few miles to my favourite dive sites but the cost of it will make me whince. What's the fun in that, might just as well go away to a nice hotel for the weekend.

Absolutely, the cost of long distance cruising for many including myself will be prohibitive. I cruised to the channel isles from chatham and back during August, I estimate that it cost about £1200 in fuel. If the estimated cost for fuel had been 2 or 3 times that cost, I simply would not have done the trip. Far better to take a holiday in the sun!

"less second hand boats will be sold"

yes, if only because who is going to buy them...

At some point maybe a boat is large enough to merit transporting from country to country if the saving is there,ie, out of UK, but that still requires a demand abroad. And its not going to be there for '00s of boats. Odd thing is, I ve been looking at 30+ for 6 months or so, and no one had the slightest interest in dropping prices. And you think.. what do you think is going to happen come December? Find a buyer now... Not me.

I know a few people who sold their boats back in the spring, predicting a significant drop in secondhand values come January 07. Several of them are preparing to jump back into the market when/if the prices stabilise at a much lower level, hoping to save themselves more than few grand (which they can use to pay for new expensive diesel). A cunning plan, and well worth a punt, I thought.

What hobbie would a one Legged reformed Pirate take up?
Anyway how many gals an hour does The Mermaid sup?
6 ish? 3 hours to get to Your Dive Sight? = £180 there and back in New money(if it goes to a fiver a gal)
Nah don,t jack it in. You'l have huge withdrawel symptoms.
Withdraw a few more quid out the Bank and stick it in your tank!
I'd chop of an appendage before giving up the boat.
Oh! crikey, that's not a good option for you .
Sorry about that. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
