A friend has a leyland 401 engine in his boat : the starter motor looks like an inertia type (no piggyback solenoid), yet has a small terminal that is connected to a largish relay(doesn't look big enough to carry the main starter current).

Anyone know if that sounds right? is the small terminal connected to some built-in solenoid or relay ?

fwiw, nothing happens when 24V is applied to the small terminal (draws current, but no movement/sound) .If 24V connected to the main (larger) terminal, motor spins away.

Thanks in advance.

Give Adams Morey a ring in Portsmouth tel 023 9269 1122. they are the local LDV agents, and have all the info on Big L and BMC engines - plus all the available spares either on the shelf or on 24 hour order. The workshop foreman is particularly helpful with info on older BMC and Leyland engines.

I think you'll find that the relay is to reduce the current through the starter switch, also reduces the volt drop from it.
