Is it just me or does everyone have a nightmare in regards to spare parts for Lewmar Windlasses.

Over two weeks and counting during peak boating season waiting for a fairly simple part (stripper) from their main UK distributor.

Lewmar apparently close down completely for 2 weeks, but I had hoped that common or garden parts would still have been available either from them or their distributor in a semi sane timescale at all times.

I fish rather than cruise so anchoring is crucial, without the stripper the windlass is either unusable or a finger muncher, neither scenario impresses me too much, I quite like having all my fingers.

Bizzare thing is, the same day I ordered the Lewmar parts I also ordered some other bits and bobs from the US, they have been here for nearly a week now!

Mine needed some spare parts and the dealers and distributors were absolutely pants.

Go straight to Lewmar. The UK techie guys were brilliant and had the parts to me the following day.

Thanks for that.

I did initially call Lewmar and they sent me round in circles, I was getting dizzy, or dizzier should I say.

I have taken your advice and called Lewmar themselves again, there is a skeleton staff on rather than the complete two week shut down which the distributor told me about.

The gentleman who I spoke to was very helpful, he is looking into it and calling me back, so we shall see what transpires.

I blame the broker who sold me the boat........;-)

Hydeawaying in SW Scotland, Merry Fishing in gods country.......;-)

And no she is not available for distant water Tuna trips......:-0

We appear to have a solution from Lewmar themselves, they might be able to "borrow" my part from someone elses not quite so urgent order and send it out Monday I think they said, so fingers crossed, we shall see if might turns into reality.

They are trying their best, but I find it quite bizzare that a company like Lewmar do not have in stock plenty of spare parts, this is a common or garden windlass with the grand total of around 50 parts we are talking about, the space shuttle it is not.

I am a great believer in supporting the British economy but I am definately having a sense of humour bypass with this one.

Glad the boat is going well even if the windlass isn't!

Are you still raping the sea bare up there?

Good luck with Lewmar... they had the parts in stock for me, but I did need to buy a "kit" rather than the actual spares I required.

Hi Tom

Over the moon with the boat mate, she is doing famously. The misses wants something bigger, that one rocks and rolls apparently, she has taken to browsing Boat International and thinks everyone should have one like Pelorus!

We are sustainably harvesting, as we do, based down where the tuna fellas operate from just now ....;-)

I would have bought a new (different make of) windlass and threw the old one in the skip if I had known it would be this long, it is pretty poor to say the least whatever the reason is for it. It is bringing back terrible memories of my old toy and (lack of) parts availability, I suspect that I am becoming traumatised by the issue!

Pmsl....it may take several, it has been a traumatic experience indeed.

While attempting to manually guide in the chain/rope yesterday, to drift for the last 15 minutes, as you do, the boat gave an almighty lurch and boof....anchor locker hatch on the napper, blood and all sorts....my windlass traumas got a whole lot worse.

Of course just at that very second an angry tope gave it loads of bzzzzzzzzz and tried to take a nice Avet/Ugly Stik combo to the horizon with it (thank god for using lanyards).....my recovery was nothing short of spectacular, a fair old lump though, I may have to sue you know.......;-)

Ohhhh... Sue!

Errr, I was only acting as broker and feel you must direct your attentions to your surveyor.
"As agents for the vendor I can only work on the information provided and accept no liability for faulty or broken equipment."
(or soemthng like that - not got my agreement thingy in front of me).

A nice BIG Rioja should sort it.
