I have a Lewmar Pro horizontal windlass and a lack of concentration on the up switch resulted in a broken drive shaft. Lewmar sell a service kit but it costs about £400 for the shaft and a few replacement gears and bits and pieces. Add fitting on to that and it is not really worth repairing. I am reluctant to buy another give Lewmar’s pricing policy and general apathy in their technical service department.

The shaft that is broken is probably less than £10 of stainless and the thought occurred to me that a good traditional engineer might be able to machine a solution.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a windlass repair engineer?

Thanks Vyv. I will call them.

Love your site by the way, I just extended my anchor chain using a c link following your research.

I suspect that if you broke the shaft the associated gears may well have damage as well.

Cannot help with anyone local to either of your addresses but I would suggest you contact Lake Engineering in Poole Lake Engineering Ltd. A top class company who do all types of machining. Although I would imagine there to be a similar company in Dartmouth.
Isn't there a member of this parish that takes on machining jobs....?
