Having managed to get the brake spindles out, I'm trying to remove steering wheel...
I believe the device that locks it is called a Whitlock Brake Spinner. One broke as I removed it, so I need to replace it. These guys have a good price, but no stock: http://www.winchservicing.com/_Whitlock_Lewmar_Bavaria_Brake_Spinner_10mm-50-3.html

Has anyone got a drawing of how this works? They don't seem to lock very firmly. A previous thread on here mentions a plunger that the spindle bears on.

Correct.

The brake spinner screws in on a thread.

There may also be a small "slug" of stainless in the shaft to create the overall right length for the spinner to activate the brake...this length varies per boat model, depth of pedestal etc.

When tightened, the end of the spinner or the slug presses onto a cross shaft, which pushes two friction surfaces together and thus creates the braking effect.

NOTE : the brake is designed to stop the rudder slopping around when anchored, moored etc. It is not designed to hold the rudder under sailing conditions, nor to act as a complete rudder stop. Therefore your comment "they don't seem to lock very firmly" probably means it is working correctly.

Thanks Ben, but I still can't picture the mechanism. The whole lot looked like it had been glued together with varnish, so I gave it a good clean. Is it possible to remove the slug? Perhaps it is being a bit sluggish!

I recall that previously you could grab the wheel and it was very hard to move, now it's just a bit stiffer.

Any suggestions where to buy new spinner?

Hi Nigel,

Hopefully the drawing below will help you understand the principle :

Capture.jpg

16 = The "slug" this could be any length and basically allows us to use one brake spinner in multiple systems
17 = The brake disc surface
13 = the pin onto which the brake spinner, via any slug, activates. This sits through a slot in the main shaft, which allows it to move away from the brake disc when released.

2 failure modes :

1. Brake disc surface has simply worn out, but this is usually caused by sailing with the brake engaged for long durations etc.
2. Brake spinner has been tightened up so much that it has bent the cross pin. This effectively means that the brake is no longer engaging fully. To remedy this, you can put in a longer slug, or add a slug if there is none presently.

Regarding replacement spinner, try Aquafax, they are our UK distributor but should be able to point you in a good direction.

***I should have said, this isn't your steering system, so don't use this as a reference for your boat, but the braking principle is exactly the same***

Is there a kit to replace the brake disc surface, I could not find it on the Lewmar site. I have a 2005 Beneteau 423 and the wheel brake has never worked. I’d like to get it working properly. Thanks!

Hi ! I found this topics and I would like to know if someone succeed to replace the brake disc surface ? Mine never works since i bought the boat. I can replace it but we are doing a 5 mouth trip and not at home. So if someone did it, i would be happy to get some information !
Thanks

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of the finding out if you could replace the brake disc surfaces. Cannot find any clear information or manual on it.
