The Princess is on charter and the windlass has packed up, which is quite critical as the client mostly likes to anchor out.

Local engineers have been unable to find a new motor and just want to fit a new windlass. Does anyone know where I may get hold of a new motor and gearbox at short notice?

Also, I seem to remember a recent thread about a procedure for manual retrieve on this windlass, but I can't find the thread. Can anyone point me to it, or remind me of the procedure, so I can pass it on to the charter skipper.

Nick

I think this was the thread

My post #72 seemed to start the conversation - most people didn't know that you couldn't lift the anchor using just the handle.
DougH has the recovery kit
I never did anything about ours - but I'm expecting for the day it will fail and I will have wished I did.

As far as spares - I think Aquafax are the boys - and will ship anywhere in the world I think

Thanks Mike, I should have read the thread more closely before and ordered the overide adapter to cover this eventuality. Hopefully Aquafax can rush one off to the south of France before the crew mutiny

hi Nick I copy paste the pm , below because I would like input from the engineering minded, as I believe for temporary retrieval all that is needed is two M12 bolts .
My lemar is easily strong enough to take the extra pressure but I dont know your design (mines has the hole ready anyway, remember most of teh force is on the centre hole but you dont want to tighten that too much hence the idea of a stop bolt...........

If a

1) M14 hole is drilled through the winch handle 4 inches from the centre.

2) M12 hole tap/dyed in the winch top.

3) when not in use a stubby M12 bolt screwed into the winch top to seal.

4) when manual retrieval needed the long M12 bolt goes through the winch handle into the winch top and you are ready to hand winch.

Now the copy paste bit about maintenance and how it works because if the internal ratchet and motor spline is seized you end up trying to winch the chain and teh motor.

i just got involved to explain the importance of very small pins and annual maintenance.
this could be your problem, two small whistle shape pins need light oil or the racket will not work and hand retrieval is heart attack stuff.

now this brass sleeve is hollow and needs to be taken off to reveal the two whistle shape pins, light oil and put it back together. without the chain the capstan should turn by hand and tick like a swiss watch.

note sleeve removed and pin now visible.

now ignore the snake/eel and note off centr winch hole on mine

this allows me to winch up without tightening the centre hole.

you should be able to buy a kit that adds a centre hole. it is remarkably easy to hand winch as long as the motor is disengaged ...............ie the ratchet pins are lightly oiled once a year.

i cant understand why lemar dont specify this, they dont seem to know anything about their own winches as if they dont make them or the blokes that designed them retried 20 years ago.

if you tighten the centre nut too much it pulls the whole sleeve up and misses the ratchet, this is designed so you can frree fall the chain.

if you man keeps tightening the centre (and the sleeve is oiled) then it should disengage the motor and winch up easily BUT as soon as he stops for a rest it will free fall so someone needs to be ready to hold the winch handle while he takes a rest'

nb the last bit could be totally ars about tit , it might actually need slackening first , sorry its late and im not on the boat to check.

it all takes apart easily and goes back together .

there is a spring that pulls the sleeve off the ratchet.
Also a keyway through the motor which should ' pop up '

Please let us know if you successfully get hold of an adapter
And how much it costs etc.
Also, how well it works

Mike, can't tell you how much the adaptor costs as mine was supplied by Sunseeker when the boat was new.

However I can confirm that the device works without any fuss and without to much muscular input.

Well worth having whatever the coat.

From my experience of buying direct from Lewmar, when they say its in stock it still takes about 6 weeks to deliver, they are never in a hurry to get things sent out, had many of angry customers who get fed up with waiting

Any joy with the search for a new motor?

Cheers
Jimmy

Yep, good idea of yours to try Princess, who have found a good condition used motor/gearbox that i'm picking up tomorrow.

At the same time, the engineer in France has bought some unspecified gearbox parts that he thinks he can bodge to get the current one working. He'll fit them Friday am, so I'll know by the evening whether I need to rush the Princess one to St Trop or not. In the meantime a small amount of care and a large amount of WD40 is allowing the skipper to use the existing worn out windlass, so it looks as though we'll get by one way or another.

Excellent, well done. If it helps, I'm on the 1405 from Gatwick to Nice on Monday afternoon and I am checking a bag (tools, inevitably).

Just following up I was mistaken ,thinking mine was a lewmar -it's a Simpson Lawrence( well they all look the same) -comes with manual kit -so I have had a go -----

Kit in its holder

Remove the cap with the winch handle

Fit the multiplier and start turning

All done-wondered what those things are for?
Also noticed rain water drains down through the locker- washes off the salt
