My lewmar rope clutch releases are covered in what looks like a powder coating, which is starting to flake off. Whilst it is warm I intend to clean the flakey coating off the aluminium handle and spray them back up to the nearest colour match.

Can you get any special paint for the job. Or should I go to Halfords and buy a primer and a pot of car spray paint.

TIA

To have any chance of success you should use an acid etch primer on the aluminium before top coating.

B&Q have small tins of etching primer at much less than swindlery prices

The anodising on my clutches started to come off, after only 6 years in relatively protected position, all eight clutches. Tried Lewmar to get a deal on new handles, only offered to sell me some at £28/handle, but did send me new labels for free.

After scraping and cleaning, I paint by hand with Hammerite Smooth, grey. Quite acceptable finish and after 2 years only slight loss on the pivot point.

I checked with Lewmar and the 6-ring clutches have an epoxy-coated cast-alloy body.

The best solution to the problem is to etch-prime the cleaned metal and then fimish off with cellulose undercoat and topcoat.

I'd be glad to know who in Lewmar offered you new clutches at £28 - the list price for my replacements would be £76 each.
