The handles on my lewmar rope clutch are starting to loose there paint, 60% of the paint has flaked off now. The handles are made from aluminium. I have taken the clutch of the boat today as I intend to clean the handles up and do something with them, but not sure what, they look like they were origionaly powder coated.

What does the forum suggest i use to replace the handles coating enalmel spray ? car spray paint from halfords ? or can you buy spray powder coatings, I'm looking for a quite tough coating.

Just thought do you have to etch aluminium before painting ?

Many Thanx

TIA

Etch primer followed by Perfection 709 (undercoat & topcoat) would be hardwearing if you have some leftovers in the paint locker. Not sure if the clearances in the clutch construction would allow for the film thickness though.

The anodising/coating on my clutches started to come off, after only 6 years in relatively protected position, all eight clutches. Tried Lewmar to get a deal on new handles, only offered to sell me some at £28/handle, but did send me new labels for free.

After scraping and cleaning, I painted by hand with Hammerite Smooth, grey. Quite acceptable finish and after 2 years only slight loss on the pivot point.

Yes sounds like my handles are in a similar state. I have taken the clutch apart this morning and spent the morning wire brushing the handles back to aluminium.

managed to find a spray paint in Q&B's which is a hard enamal, called Plasti-Kote will prime the handles up first and wet 'n' dry them and have a go with the spray paint tomorrow. even if i make a mess of it i should look a lot better than before.

many thanks for you advise

Refinishing Lewmar Rope Clutch Handles

Mine are anodised. Fortunately being under the hood no loss of coating.

To do a half decent job you'll need to etch-prime and then finish with epoxy or 2-pot polyurethane paint.
You could try and find and anodiser who will re-anodise for you.

Probably the simplest course is to put some Hammerite on, it's acid and hides the problem for another couple of years.

I am assuming the ones you're using are the Multi-ring type, not the serrated cam.
