Lewmar 40 winch c.1980 how do I remove lower gears.?

I am struggling to find a good maintenance guide or instructions for removing the lower gears on a Lewmar 40 winch c.1980. The lower pin looks as though it is captured by the tab on the casting.

Indeed. I've never serviced that winch but as I was looking at the photo I was thinking that the centre of the pin does not appear to be concentric with my estimated centre of the pinion.

Thank all, going to try and rotate the spindle this afternoon, if that fails I will remove the entire assembly to the workbench.
