The 34 ST was discontinued about 20 years ago and (good old) Cruisermart
sold me one during the eos sale. Its moment of glory has now arrived but I
can't disassemble it for installation. The stripper arm has no visible screw,
circlip or other thingy to enable lift-off. I've tried gentle persuasion to no avail
so (before the sledge) can anyone help? Lewmar's site couldn't.

i don't know the st34 but have stripped various lewmar winches. these are a few of the possible first steps:

on my st40 there is a conical chrome ring around the handle socket with two triangular indents. in the absence of a special tool you can use two big flat-blade screwdrivers crossed over and fitted into the indents. it unscrews anticlockwise.

failing that i would look for a large slotted screw at the bottom of the handle socket (no, that's too obvious)

some lewmar single speeds had an odd circlip around the edge of the socket, it was a keyring-style circlip easily removed by levering under the end with a small screwdriver.

when you lift off the stripper there are a couple of keys with teeth that engage the stripper. these are a loose fit into the central spindle and fall out once the stripper is removed!

This sound like the modern 'Wavespring' version of the 34ST. The older Wavegrips had a a cap with 4 screws on top.

If it is, there should be 2 indents in the cap. You can gently drift these to unscrew the cap (anti-clockwise). After it moves, you should be able to unscrew by hand.

You can download a good guide to servicing these winches from

Re: Lewmar 34 ST - problem solved.

Thanks to you both. There are no indents anywhere but by blocking it with a
winch handle and twisting (a rubber mallet was at the ready but not necessary)
anticlock as advised, the stripper unscrewed easily.
