I'm having trouble finding a sensibly priced flight from Preveza to UK one way (sailing in, flying out). Any suggestions please - current prices are as high as £250 per person on charter flights. Am I better waiting until nearer the required date, or do prices go up even higher? Thanks.
No, the charter flights operate on the opposite pricing strategy of Easyjet/Ryanair; the earlier you book, the more expensive it will be. They would rather sell a whole hotel package on those seats. They will drop very dramatically about four days prior to departure if they see that they have empty seats; rather 50 quid for a seat than zero. So you have a gamble: wait until the last moment and get a cheap seat or find that the flight is full. You take your pick.
There is another alternative not mentioned above. You get a taxi/bus to Igomenitsa and then a ferry to Corfu. There are many more flight options from there than Preveza, but it is a longer transfer.
If you are in Preveza without a ticket go and see Jeni Nota at Karyatis Travel. She often has a tickets at reasonable prices a couple of days before. Her best was London for £40. She can also get cheap tickets to other cites such as Brussels, Paris or Amsterdam [ideal for Hull] for onward travel. And give her our regards.
Charter prices will will go up or down unpredictably depending how well package holidays are selling.
If they sell badly, cheap departures from UK become available about 2 - 3 weeks beforehand - but you'll usually buy the full package grossly discounted (£140 - £200) rather than a flight only (they're hoping to make money from you in resort, and selling travel insurance). Obviously, you don't need to use the hotel or the return flight, but the transfer can be useful . . .
And if sales are really bad, the 'flight onlies' start to appear, becoming cheaper by the day. 6 days beforehand is fire sale . . . but trawling through all those phone numbers (web sites aren't so good at last minute spots) is a real drag.
One seat real cheapies (<£100) on a return flight are almost always possible 6 days or less before departure; 2 or more seats more difficult. The secret here is to find the local ticket agency which acts as a clearance house for empties. All the local expats know who they are . . .
Thanks, everybody. As the date is not critical, we'll leave it until the last few days before we leave for the UK. Reassuring to know it is all possible.
Preveza flight cost and availablilty seems to be dependent on UK weather and people's last minute decisions. Returning home last October we were completely unable to buy two charter seats to Manchester. We tried all the charter companies and every Nidri travel agent. The word was that due to the poor UK summer many people had decided to take late holidays and that consequently everything was booked up. In the end we took the bus to Athens and came home by Olympia.
Relatives joining us in the early summer have paid around £260 Gatwick - Preveza.
And I've just shelled out £105 each way with BA, Athens to London and back in August. With 4 flights a day, it was easy to select neat flight times. Aegean asked a similar price for Stansted, while EasyJ was about £10 cheaper from Gatwick.
Luckily, I like the overnight to Athens, cos I can then catch an early bus to where-ever, and those buses are great.

I don't think it's got that much to do with the weather - the late october flights back are always at a premium because all the "summer expats" are attempting to head home at the end of the season...
We got a good deal with Satellite Travel for Preveza. - they pick up the unused charter flights about 3 to 4 days before liftoff www.satellitetravel.co.uk
