Letting the side down?

Just been reading my up on my other hobby when I came across this

Is there ever an excuse for bullying a small vessel even when racing? It is disapointing to see that people not sharing the water.

I my view the kayaks had right of way - if nothing else the sailing boat was overtaking.

But I had always assumed I had right of way anyway in my sea kayak - it has to be said I dont usally enforse it - even a modest boat looks huge from 2 feet above sea level - the sight of the container ships in the solent coming straight at you is very very unpleasent!

interesting thread but if you realy want confusion and vested interest there are some cracking ones currently on the US regarding kite surfers and col regs..........

agreed - real shame and no excuse. this would of course also apply if the kayak had seen the sailing vessel early adn was in some way being bloody minded and not helping it pass - not suggesting this was the case just pointing out that inteh eyes of different parties bloody mindedness can be different things eg I know some people gt upset by cars in the outside lane at only 70mph...)

no such thing as right of way. however I would agree that as set out the kayak was the stand on vessel and obligated to maintain course and speed as such

no - as highlighted in the link you supplied (1) no one has right of way, although some vessels displaying signals highlighting their inability to manoevre should be treated as if they do! (2) no one class of vessel (except not under command or at anchor possibly) has any 'universal rights' (3) as every other vessel you will follow the IRPCs requirements to any situation.

I think this reveals the overall belief held by most racing crews that all other boats should give way to them. This gets worse in Cowes week where a sizable proportion of the fleet seem to hold the view that the solent should be closed to all other craft.

Notwithstanding this, the level of ignorance shown on the above link about the rules of the road is almost frightening. The overtaking rule is the one that appears to be misunderstood more than anyother.
