..I think you might be confusing fray bentos, the edible frisbee, with marmite, the ambrosia of the gods. If ever a fray bentos pie looks like black gloop in a jar, it has been over matured.

In South Africa you get Fray Bentos in a jar It looks like Bovril. I am a fellow Marmitee does that mean we can be friends?

But you're right about bovril. It is to marmite like a bar of chocolate flavoured with brussel sprouts. It looks the part but doesn't quite taste the same. I never came across the South African version.
Incidentally can you get boerewors up north? I found someone who made some quite good ones near me in Petersfield, but I can't get there very often.

The best boere wors I could get was stuff I made myself but I could only get very thin skins kind of defeated the purpose. I think if you go onto the voetsak website you can buy just about anything including Fray Bentos in a jar.
