Want to get out of my dinghy and learn to sail a bigger boat. Can't do an RYA course cos dont like em and would have to starve the kidz for a month to pay for it! I am a fully qualified driving instructor and am offering to teach someone to drive from scratch to test in exchange for informal lessons on one of those yachtie thingies. Can sail a dinghy, paddle a kayak and I do a damn fine doggy paddle. I live in Falmouth so would be keen to hear from anyone in down this way. Time to buff up up my brand new yeller wellies.

To be fair, if you can sail a dinghy then moving up to a 'bigger' boat will be a walk in the park. You already have that experience which is missing in a very high percentage of marina's.

Though your offer is brilliant and I am sure somebody with a 17 year old will bite your hand off, I really think you should not worry about sailing skills.

Or on the other hand, you will have to learn to motor when ever the wind drops below F3 or tacking is required! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Welcome aboard, put a note in the local club asking if any one is looking for crew, with your water experience, providing you don't have two heads and a body odour problem, you will probably be inundated with offers. You also get a chance to sample different skippers on lots of different boats, not just a white plastic French or German one.

All the best

Great offer ADI... a fair trade of skills.... suggest you get them to focus upon handling under power, rules of the road, and other basics like how to manage marinas, bouyage, safety and etiquette, as having made the same transition a few years back, these are the things with dinghy sailors where knowledge is lacking... whereas, as Ships_woofy pointed out, you'll already understand the basics of points of sail, and sail trimming.... a big headstart!

Enjoy!

Thanks for all your feedback guys. I realise that my dinghy exp will stand me in good stead but wanna get a feel for bigger boats and going out more than a mile or so! If I get it wrong "dinghy style" at least I get to improve my doggy paddle and then climb straight back on but with bigger loads on yots dont want to get it too wrong too soon and spread my nose behind my left ear! dont want to upset the club commodore either, until I know enough to bullshit my way out of it! First thing tomorrow then its off to the sailing clubs (just hope they dont expect me to use the tradesmens entrance !
