It appears that unlike a vertical axis windlass the motor does not receive regular dousing with seawater. My Maxwell motor casing rusted quite quickly so after one season I painted it with Hammerite. This helped a bit but not enough. Next I wrapped it in Denso tape, a remarkable corrosion resistant material that protects tubular submerged to 500 ft in the North Sea for long periods. It is horrible sticky stuff to handle so I wrapped it in polythene sheet and Duck tape.I set the template up to line the chain fall up as per instructions, the big hole I then cut using chain drill and a jigsaw. The Bemeteau plinth is thick ply with gel and figlass on top and bottom. I made sure everything fitted then west epoxied the raw edges.
I checked it in October 2022 after more than 7 years undisturbed and was pleased to find no corrosion at all.
