Got up at 4.00am yesterday to watch the Leonid meteor shower - more like a storm, actually. Pretty spectacular display - would have been better view if floating out on Gulf of Mex, but no takers. First saw this event in 1998 whilst in FL Keys. Thought it was alien invasion until read about it later.
was anything visible on other side of pond? I believe Earth was facing wrong way for second peak at 18.00UT for good show in Europe
 
You have now idea how grateful Iam for your info what i am missing. Grrrrrrrr.Bought new telescope recently G/Tee rain next 4 months.

is that the same telescope that sees Palma clearly? ;-)

Didn't mean to rub it in. We have a lot of cloud in summer and generally clear in winter, so hope to be able to use my telescope more now. Which model did you buy? One of our sons gave me a Meade for my 60th. It's not computerised, but I'm very pleased with it.
 
having read Day of the Triffids and seen the film there's no way I would watch a meteor shower ;-)
p.s. My Brother was in that film, he was a Triffid.

I have a basic 8" celestar with a totally out of proportion collection of eyepieces.All purchased so ahem cheaply that did not seem worth bothering my swmbo with the trifling cost of same.Ps recently moved house in order to get a decent dark sky site.Not too far from boat mind.

Just make sure you point the telescope to the east, cos America's that way and you'll see it dead clear. It's just past Malaga on the outskirts of Cyprus.

BTW doddery oldgit what is your boat and WHERE is it. And please don't tell me it's in the water at the marina ;-)

The boat that-owns-me is is princess 25 n it lives on the Swale near The kingsferry Bridge.Hours of fun watching the yoties making a hash of it waiting for it to lift.Most satisfiying to nip under and away knowing man who operates is milesaway in local pub.

Finding dark sky nowadays is a major problem, isn't it?
There's a lot of international activity to bring back dark sky.
I have to drive half way across Florida to find some and run the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes, no-see-ums, rattlesnakes and alligators. An' all that to see some Messier objects. Life can be really exciting on land, too! ( I find that on most days when I ride my bike 15-22 miles along this island, looking out for oldies who can just see over the steering wheel).
