I had to remove the front end casting from the boom of my boat to free a trapped rope. Now I'm wondering what length of rivet to use. The hole will take a 4.8mm rivet and the depth is about 8mm.
How long should the rivets be, please, excluding the mandrel?
I'm thinking of using monal rivets.

I would suggest that you buy a suitable 5 or 6mm tap and refit with metal thread screws. If you dose it with Duralac before refitting you will be able to remove again. I have had to remove the end casting every few years on my boom. Put duralac around the casting where it contacts the boom as well as corrosion cannmake it difficult to remove without damage. olewill

Good idea. I was wondering about the efficacy of that approach as it is always a devil to get the ropes out for the annual wash.
My regular crew has all the necessary taps, drills etc for this purpose and is keen to help.
