Bilge Keel 26-30ft - Recommendations?

I'm in the Bristol area and looking for a bilge keel boat to allow me to dry out and get to some more adventurous places. Ideally I'd like a good study boat which will happily take a Force 7 if necessary.

I've recently spotted a couple of Jaguars which seem nice but unsure of their pedigree.

Budget 15k +/- 20%

Suggestions on a postcard please :D

Many thanks

Tim

sailed a Jaguar 27 from E Scotland to med and lived aboard for 3 years. depends what you want to know.

Sorry I amended my question above :)

Just the overall feel / performance in your opinion really. A good boat for the money?

I have a fin keel Jaguar 27.
They are based on the Catalina 27 which was a very popular mass produced yacht in the US.
I only recently discovered that a twin keel had been produced, but suspect they are some thing of a rarity.
They are described as 6 berth, but 3/4 is probably more practical. The main hatch is more like a sunroof and there is good room in the cockpit (for four).
You would be looking at something between 30 and 40 years old, so would either expect a lot of change from your budget or recent sails/engine etc.
Sailing, it needs to be kept fairly upright or it'll round up/broach; so reefing early is a good idea. This may not apply to the twin keel.
If there is anything specific, please ask.

Leisure 29

I have owned a twin keel L29 (Lynx29 is the same boat) for 20 years. Have sailed about 12k miles mostly in CI/Brittany/Normandy summer & winter. Have regularly sailed in F6/7 and have even seen 55kts wind over the quarter . Boat is strong, dry, easy to sail and I have never felt uncomfortable in any conditions. It is also very roomy with 6ft standing headroom. Has 6 berths but you would have to be very organised & friendly! Luxurious for 2 & comfortable for 4. Lots of info on the LOA Website including owners manual (but I think you have to join to see that). Obviously I am biased but well worth looking at if you can find one - only about 35 built.

Dave.

I noticed a Jaguar 27 completed a circum-navigation which was summarised in 'Twenty small boats to take you anywhere'.

It was rated the poorest out of 20 for blue water sailing but it did get round so I guess that says something....

I used to run the Jaguar Owners Assoc. after setting it up,( as given above in a previous post) and have until recently owned a Jag 22 & a Jag 27, the latter for 14 years...... I have only just sold her.....
I can supply buckets of info on these if you wish. Contrary to an earlier post, the TK 27 are very common variants. The Jaguar 27 including the catalina 27 ( the Jaguar is a UK licenced Catalina) is probably the most successful design afloat in terms of nos. built.
The Lynx 29 ( stretched Leisure 27) was also built by CYB, the builders of the Jaguar range......
The Stag 28, is an exceptional craft, though not for drying out on, as the lift keel is housed in a stub keel.....

If you want detailed info/tests/spec/reports/opinion on the jaguar 27, feel free to email me at laurie@lmilton.co.uk
