Looking at a few Leisure 20‘s at the moment. What sort of price would you pay for one in good condition without a road legal trailer?

Almost impossible to say - only you can decide whether the price being asked meets your expectations. Boatshed have one for sale asking £6k which seems on the high side for a near 40 year old 20' boat, but it looks in tidy condition with a new outboard. with that sort of boat it is perhaps more important to look at how little you need to spend to start using it rather than the actual purchase price - including whether it is located convenient to where you want to use it.

What attracts you to that model? Plenty of cheap options in that size range. Post some of your targets and we'll see.
Always liked the L20 ticks all the boxes for what I want but the problem is they are mostly in the south coast and I live on the west of Scotland. As soon as you advertise for a L20 everyone is valued at £5000 for some reason, plus transport cost on top.

6k seems more than you pay for L23's! Its a trailer sailer, I would have thought 3k for a very good one ready to go, maybe 4k if they rarely come up. But as Tranona says, only you can decide the value of a particular boat to you.
To oaraphrase some famous old economist, (Keynes?) , if you pay too much, you lose only a little money, but pay too little and all the money is wasted plus your time and effort.

valued at £5000

Just had a look on Apolloduck for boats >20ft and between £2k-6k. There is quite a few good choice's I'd have over a leisure 20 - nice enough boats but pretty cramped down below.

There's a Tomahawk 25, already in argyle and Bute that are well respected sailing boats

Also a King Cruiser 29 in Inverness - beautiful boats although this needs a bit of elbow work - quite cheap at a couple of £3k so potential to invest in new stove / sails. (in fact I think I saw one on Facebook for sale in Orkney / Shetland)

The Ruffian 23 in HolyLoch looks well presented

There is a really nice Invicta 26 for sale in Pembrokeshire for £4.5k (My pick of the bunch)

There's also a Sadler 25 at £6k, but looks in mint condition - again in Wales, but easy enough sail up to West Coast over a fortnights cruise.

There is also a tidy looking Centaur in Holy Loch for £5.5k which is worth considering.

Although if you can stretch to £8.5k there is a super looking Jenneau Fantasia 27!

Surely the main benefit of a small boat like a L20 is the trail ability - able to drive to remote cruising grounds and launch there, and keep at home or in a friendly farmer’s field in the winter.
So one with a decent trailer at £3k or so might be a great way to go boating Economically. But if no trailer, and looking at £6k or so, may as well get a 26 footer as better for sailing - and more choices locally saving delivery costs.

The L20 suits me as I mostly sail on my own and the cabin size is ideal and also affordable for winter storage. The tomahawk 25 is a fin keel which brings its own problems.

The keel setup not suitable on a Anderson 22, need a bilge keel.

I had one. Sailed well off the wind and had a much bigger boat feel both at anchor and under sail. Brilliant creek crawler on the East Coast. Quite big to trail.

Unfortunately, with bilge keels and a draft of 2'6" , she went sideways to windward. You either put the engine on or started breaking records for the most tacks ever made on the length of the River Blackwater. I don't regret buying her though. I'm guessing you need a boat that will dry out upright without debris getting stuck in a lift keel boat.

I owned a Leisure 20 for around 10 years kept on a cheap swinging mooring in Bradwell creek.

It's a well made robust boat and the only expenses I had with mine was a suite of sails and a new rudder, which alongside the cabin roof where the mast bears down is a weak spot on them. The outboard well benefits from a blanking plate when sailing and definately needs one if you're sleeping on board because unless its a flat calm water will be be slopping and glooping in and out of it all night. Headroom is only five and a bit foot but you can sleep 4 at a squeeze and I made a cockpit tent out of an old tarp for mine. Mine had a 5HP long shaft outboard and could have done with a bit more poke on occasions.

Windward performance isn't great and you'd plan to be making 10-15 degrees of leeway and even with a spinnaker off wind you'd rarely make much more than 4kn so it's not really for racing but it'll mostly sail as well or perhaps a little better than similar sized boats of the same era.

Like any old boat you need to find a good one at the right price, but for what it is there's nothing really to dislike.

A tidy Leisure 20 has just popped up on the Yachts for Sale UK Facebook group for 2200 which is a bit more like it for that size boat.
