I am about to start making a pair of legs for my Stag (28ft, about 3 tonnes, long, shallow keel draws 3 feet). I've already cut some bearers to the shape of the hull and intend to fix these to (probably) 3" x 3" legs. Rather than drilling holes through the topsides, I'm thinking of lashing the legs to my midships cleats which are through bolted, with the usual fore and aft 'springs' to the bottom of the legs.
I have no idea of the forces involved but think that maybe it might give a little 'spring suspension' during the actual moments of grounding.
Does anybody have any views as to whether this is likely to be strong enough?

Since the occasional rogue force is almost incalculable, I think you are taking a pretty good approach. As long as there is a good elastic upward resistance/component from the cleat, you should be fine. You'll also need a downward support to stop the leg from falling too low when held by the fore and aft components, but I have the feeling you've thought of that already.
