legalise of buying boats- info req\'d please

having not bought a yacht before, but heard various tales of the registration process, ships register / ssr / K numbers, 12 th shares etc etc
we just want to buy a cruising occaisional racing 40 ft yacht, i've had a quick search on the ships registration , can someone please point me in the right direction to any relevant article -

First point. You are not forced to register your boat in the UK.
Most foreign countries insist on registration.
So you have three registration options.
One. Don't bother - but you will have problems going abroad.
Two. Register on the SSR (Small Ships Registry ) Cost 10 quid, do it on line. You get a nice document which means nothing but keeps foreign harbourmasters happy.
Three. Register on Part 1 - Full, formal, proof of ownership, proof of title, mortgages, loans, liens and encumbrances. Expense - not currently sure but guess 100 quid.

woah there Cliff!

I did that once on PBO concerning a 65ft'er as a first boat and you jumped on me cos you knew the chap!

It started as a questions of dock lines if you remember.

cheeky lot, have to add, been a skipper / crew for 20+ years, so one hell of saving up!!
