Last job is to top up the trim pump fluids.

I have looked at the manuals and one says "trim the legs all the way in" and the overhaul manual said "trim all the way"

Does that mean up or down????

Sorry forgot to say VP 290 DP's.

Thanks for any help and HLB please dont shout at me for yet another boring post /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Trim all the way in. I know this from unfortunate experience as I am having 2 drive trim rams replaced as I hadn't been trimming them all the way in, they then accumulated a bit of crud which nadgered the ram seals... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As already stated, legs trimmed fully in and trim tabs fully up. Leave the steering in the straight ahead postion.

Cheers for that chaps.

Hopefully back in the water next weekend. New fuel pump going on tmrw and then just trim tabs to sort (electrical I think).

Heres to a summer of posting great pictures on the forum!!

"SNAP"
We've had the same problem, though have hopefully avoided Volvo's ridiculously expensive cure/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I'll report again when the boat goes back into the water and we have done the trials.

Please do, my boat is out of the water at the moment to have the gators changed and the mechanic noticed that one of the trim cylinders was leaking slightly, what a mega job to get it off, as it is very difficult to get at the holding pin which is located behind the engines,Volvo do a type of punch that you fill with grease and screw it into this hole then you keep hitting it with a hammer and hopefully it forces the pin out,not a chance of it shifting. The bad news is that we noticed that there was a bit of pitting on the other 3 rams as well, so it looks like I will have to have them all changed at £399.00 plus VAT at Volvo or £299.00 plus Vat at key parts, I would'nt mind but the boat is only 4 years old and I always trim the legs in whenever I am not using the boat to prevent growth on the rams that could damage the seals. You would think that you would be able to buy a new ram and seals and just replace them parts rather than have to buy the whole thing,Volvo rip off for you.

Hadn't really considered the in or out issue as my boat very nearly dries I have to have the legs up when not in use.. I am in fresh water so fouling is not as bad but, thanks to you guys, I will be paying close attention to keeping the rams clear of fouling.. thanks Iain

Just been doing the same today. boat lifted and as we were antifouling her noticed a drip from one of the gators on the steering rams only fit last year. Off I went through the yard to find the Volvo Machanic who fitted them. To be fair he did come straight over for a loog and convinced me that what dripped out was only dirty water mixed with a little greese. After reading about all the problems everybody seems to be suffering supose I'm a bit jumpy but still dont feel confident that the rams will last this season. I was told today that fitted part only have 6 months waranty? I always thought that parts fitted by reputable dealers had a one year waranty??

It seems that as far as rams tilt or steering Volvo seem to be getting it wrong and they sould offer some sort of recon service as these parts seem so unreliable.

Not looking forward to going back in the water on Friday as I can see that after a trip around the port I will be seeking another lift out.

If you have pitting on the rams, it may a bit of galvanic corrosion. When servicing the drives check with a multimeter between the anode on the transom and one of the screws on the rams to make sure there is a good electrical connection between them.

Make sure that the clamp on the crossover pipes to the rams is in place and that its braided wire is attached to the transom. Then put the multimeter to read resistance and put one probe on the anode and the other on one of stainless screws that hold in the hydraulic pipes to the ram or one of the blanking screws. You want to get a reading that shows you have electrical continuity ie 0 Ohms.

Yes, real Volvo Rip-Off indeed.
Get a price from Coastal Rides for the rams - when I last looked they were a bit cheaper than Keypart - might not be so now, though.
What we've done is find a backstreet metal worker in Brum who was capable of S/S welding to fill the small grooves in the rod. He then polished it to "as new" condition. They will be re-fitted next week so look forward to seeing the results over the next few months.

We are going to attempt to dig a "deep" hole in the estuary bed where we dry out. This may allow us to leave the leg down in future.

The rumour I heard is that the seals are a standard size and can be purchased from your local bearing/seal man. The problem is getting the ali ram retainer ring out(unscrewed) without mullering the cylinder. I suspect VP service men have tried it but the retainer ali just disintegrates as you try to put some force on to unscrew it... Your ram pitting 'could' be machined out, but you are reducing the thickness of the hardened surface - and anyway, all this grunting from spanner monkey, then machining would cost you your £300 for a new one - I suspect.....
