Hi,

I am right-handed and am trying to decide between a right and a left-handed sailmakers' palm. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference but has anyone tried both options and ended up with a strong preference ? Is one of these options "normal" ?

Thanks,

I'm right handed and use a right handed palm. If you start the needle with your right hand fingers you surely want to finish pushing with the right hand 'pusher'. If you sew with the right hand but want to push with the left then you would be forever manoeuvring the sail/rope/thread.

But after starting the needle don't you need to pull with the right hand whilst pushing with the palm on the left hand ?

Usually I'm holding the work with my left hand, I use my right hand (with palm) to push the needle most of the way through, then grip the other side of it with my right-hand fingers and pull it through.

You can't simultaneously push the needle with one hand and pull it with the other, unless you have a third arm to hold the fabric :)

I generally use a palm and needle for whipping ends of lines, I'd agree that a right handed palm is the best for a right handed person. There is a natural follow through of palm to push the needle through. As above, I hold the item with my left and do the push and pulling with my right. I think it would be confusing with a left handed palm.

I usually push the needle through with the same hand that I use to hold the needle (my right) as the left is often used to hold the work - after all if you are having to push the needle with the palm you need to be pushing against something.
