Hello everybody.
I haven't converted to LED's yet but as it seems so good I'm thinking about doing it this winter.
I have one question though. I know they can be found in warm colour now, but what are they like to use for a long period of time for reading or doing fiddly jobs when ones eyes are not so good any more?
There is no way I would swap my halogenes for neon tubes because those do my eyes in so I am looking for long time users of LED's to tell me what they think.
Cheers....

For reading / general cabin use, we have the warm bulbs with 10 LEDs which are ample.

In smaller spaces, you can get away with less, even as low as 4 LEDs.

Consumption is brilliant, I don´t have to follow SWMBO round turning everything off.

You can get some good deals if you shop around for volume, straight out of the chandlers can set you back quite a bit though

Having tried a sample of warm and white light we went against the perceived wisdom and bought white lights. Excellent for reading and do not have the problems others have with them. But if you can try one of each before you buy for the whole boat and see what you think, because I do believe it is a personal taste issue.

Try and obtain like for like replacements. I spent an age trying to find replacement for my halogen spots. The ones I got from Bedazzled have been more than fine, don't get hot and offer more warm light than the originals and of course use hardly any amps. I bought the MR-16 15L bulbs see - http://www.bedazzled.uk.com/12v_LED_Bulb_Replacement.htm
and also the festoon 42mm - 9L for my cabin dome lights. Existing lights had 2x bulbs in and now I can get away with 1 x bulb or 2 for an even better spread of light than before - all "warm". Now looking aqt their replacement LED tube. Cost a bit though .....

We've got warm white LEDs throughout the boat now. Only left the flourescent fitting above the galley which isn't LED. We've found them great - nice light to sit about in, plenty to read by and easy on the eyes. We've got 2 white LED lights for the cockpit, which give bags of light but are not as pleasent to the eye as the warm white ones. There's lots of choice out there and the best buys are to be had on ebay, where they are often supplied direct from the manufacturers in China. Takes about 10 days for the order to arrive but does what it says on the tin. No 'noise' generated by them on the VHF either.

I havre about ten lighjts left to do on my boat, need to order some more fittings, then the whole boat is doen and we have aq lot of lights, huge difference in leccy consumption, wish we could get LED equivalent fridges!! Then would be self suffcicient with solar!!

as an aside I get my LED bulbs and two pin fittings, from ATEN lighting, always excellent service and help, good prices also, never had one bulb fail and I have had over 30 from them, been on the boat now for two years. All the usual disclaimers, Not my company etc.

LEDS

2nd Bedazzled - very helpful and good value.Order a selection of sizes to try in areas like galley, lounge and for reading and then order for the whole boat- you can return the ones not chosen. We went for 6s and 10s, all warm white with dramatic reduction in consumption.

We bought these units from IKEA.
They are now £46 for 4 units, and can be powered off mains or 12v.
They are the resistant ones which will soak up start surge voltages.

They also swivel about 10 degrees, and are very nicely made.

FullCircle, thanks for the link, they look very smart! :) Did you install yet? I'm keen to see how bright they are onboard.

Yes, they have been in for a season.
They are actually brighter than the G4 12v halogens that they replaced.
Excellent quality of light.

FullCircle;
Just wondering if they went into the head liner where your old G4's used to go? Or did you mount them elsewhere?

I recall you have an SO35 which I believe has the same fittings as my SO40, so would welcome your input.

Cheers, PT.

PT,
the IKEA fittings covered the existing apertures quite comfortably, and are plant onto the headliner, rather than through it. Wiring wqas dead simple, just added a crimp on connector to each of the wires, and used the original Jeanneau wire feeds and connectors. Easy Peasy.
