LED Spreader Lights - Recommendations please

While the mast is down, I'm going to install 2 LED lights on the spreaders.

Looking for something good quality that will require little to no maintenance.

Looking for recommendations please.

No idea how they will fare in the marine environment. The end fittings are ferrous and need to be replaced with stainless or plastic.

I have one of their PAR36 which is a replacement for a tungsten bulb foredeck light, plenty of spreader options on the same page. They are not always the cheapest but the quality, especially for our application, is good.

Installed one of these and it's been good. Plenty of light on deck in the dark and a steaming light which is useful and a back up if the tricolour fails.

That's nice, Martin. The OP is asking about spreader lights - not combined steaming/foredeck lights.

I agree that a light illuminating the foredeck is beneficial and for safety.

Point taken - I thought a single LED light would offer plenty of light and simple cable routing.

I have had my tricolour connections fail intermittently and at least I have a backup anchor light or a white light positioned well above deck level, if not colreg compliant.

Perhaps I am alone in experiencing electrical hiccups ?

If you can stomach the price the hella marine seahawk flood lights are extremely good, had first hand use of many of them and despite commercial use very few faliuires across a fleet of ships. So low that the maintenance system didn't even list it as a part after 5 years and each ship had about 40 of them! (the system listed cup holders!)

I put one 4inch cheap off-road led spot light tight up under my radar dome. Has lasted well in the 4years since it was fitted.

It provides great light and draws almost no current. One if my things to do is fit a remote control so that I could switch it on when arriving to the boat at night.

These little guys 10w chip on board LED are brilliant. They need to be screwed to the under side of the spreader and are very low profile. I made my own from dud PAR 36 lamps when you couldn’t get ready made ones with LED. I cut a hole in the back, pulled out the filament, glued in a 3.5W led unit from Bedazled with sealant. Has lasted 10 yrs. Gives about the right light output.

I just replaced a deck light that got smashed recently with this one:

For the cost it’s probably not worth making your own. Seems to be a good unit. Gives a smooth light, fairly cool colour. It is sold as a sealed, which is what is needed. Might be too much light for spreaders at 8w though if you had two. You could probably dim them though.

You could also use a domestic 12v MR16 lamp with an appropriate luminaire. I have had one on my boom about 4 years from Philips. A sealed unit. Much better light quality than your usual led. Am very satisfied:

Certainly can't beat the quality, but only 200 lumens, so OK for an engine room, but I was thinking spreader lights would be more powerful.

Yep, their spreader lights at £75 look quality, and reasonable lumens at 630, on the short list!

I don't think they are that powerful .

. I put my radar scanner up pretty high on the mast (above my topping lift) and the pool of light is impressive and excellent for coming into a marina, or tinkering around on deck..

I have another on a lead plugged in at the companionway which gives me a really good handheld spotlight.
