Does anyone know if it's possible to buy LED clusters, with bayonet fittings, to fit directly into existing nav lights (eg masthead tricolour), to replace standard 25 / 10 W nav light bulbs?

If so, where from?

I know you can buy whole new LED nav lights but they're quite expensive, & I haven't seen any masthead tricolours, only all round whites + side / steaming lights.

I do not think you can use white leds inside the tricolour: the led light frequency band is very narrow, and passing through green and red plastic it will decrease *very much in intensity

might be ok for an anchor light though

Gael Force sell LED tricolour but they are expensive (£230 or £270 with anchor light)
I've never seen LED's with fitting for standard bulbs

OK, just done a search on this forum & I see there has already been quite a lot of discussion on the subject, unless anyone has any new suppliers that haven't already been mentioned.

The problem with LEDs is they are very directional, unlike a bulb which emits light evenly. A considerable number of LEDs are needed to give the even spread of light a nav light requires, hence the cost of the commercial ones.

Just got a mast head light from (www.ultraleds.co.uk) £12 +p&p there is about 16 led`s at different angles with a 15mm bayonet and a single contact, unfortunately mine is a ofset pin 15mm bayonet with two contacts so I had to solder a old base to my new led bulb.

Pete, the masthead light you got from ultraleds.co.uk - is that to put in a tricolour (ie will it be shining through coloured glass)?

If so, how does the brightness compare? I looked on their website & I couldn't see any claims re what distance they are visible from.

LED nav lights don't yet come up to the required standard for light intensity to make them legal for use in the UK (or Europe for that matter) without consuming more current than a normal bulb.
