Mrs D has accepted a new job in Kingsbridge, S. Devon, so after more than 50 years of sailing the Thames Estuary we shall be leaving Ramsholt, the Deben, and all you lovely people, and the tranquillity of the rivers and marshes, for the cleaner waters of the SW.

Preliminary indications are that the costs down West are utterly horrendous with waiting lists for municipal moorings long enough to see out my lifetime!

However, I have a positive indication of availability of a deep water swinging mooring for about only three times the gross of what Ramsholt costs, so fingers crossed.

It will be a huge wrench to leave Suffolk after all this time, particularly as I have had loads of time out and about this lovely summer since I retired in April.

Thanks Rog.
We shall be on the hard at Foxs for the winter in the lower meadow , and I shall have to be up and down to Hertfordshire regularly as I have social commitments here until the end of June, so no doubt I will be able to buy you a beer before we finally take our leave.

Undecided at the mo whether to sail or truck down west in the spring, but no doubt all will come out in the wash!

Once you are sailing in the area do forget east coast habits of accepting 1m under the keel as fine.
The bottom is MUCH harder than ours!

There again you can normally see it with 5m under the keel!

Do have a lovely time sailing in another wonderful area.

Best of luck

As you know quite often in the spring we have weeks of Easterly winds - ideal for the delivery trip if you wrap up well!

BTW if you end up in the Wash you have turned the wrong way ;-)

Having only been on the East Coast for 15 years I am jealous as I love the SW having spent a few summers cruising there in my teens and a winter sailing out of Dartmouth.

You failed to say it was all expenses paid with free boats :p

It wasn't. Only the winter sailing out of Dartmouth, but we still had to pay mooring fees in other harbours and with six 18 to 23 year olds onboard a brand new Contessa 38 the beer, gin and port bill was HUGE. :p

Risking one's life day in day out in service of Her Majesty and the Country, at the whim of politicians has to have some benefits.

I can send you my FiLs flying logbook dated 1944/45

Moorings? at a more reasonable cost? try Galmpton stretch of the river, often more reasonable cost than Dartmouth or Kingsbridge :)
South Hams council like to reserve moorings for the locals; so how old did you say you were? :(

Moorings down west seem problematical , and that is being kind!
South Hams D C /Salcombe harbour used only to accept applications from permanent residents of South Hams as evidenced by your Council Tax demand. With the shift to charging second homers 100% from last April the council accepts it will have to allow all those bods onto their waiting list.
However, what effect that will have no one can yet tell.
With our draft of 2m we need deep water so Kingsbridge is out.
On the Dart, waiting lists for our length (11m) run to 5/10 years!
I can get a nice pontoon mooring above salcombe for £4250 plus harbour dues- no time ashore or
lift in/out in there.
However I had a very positive chat to the HM at Brixham on Monday and that looks like a runner for next year.
CP I'm 62.
