Hi guys just bought an islander 23 that's lying in penarth marina going to get her next week when I'm home from sea was wondering what would be best state of tide to leave not done much work south of holyhead so unfamiliar with area many thanks john

Leave about half-an-hour before HW Cardiff. Carry the full tide west. Then stop.

There's an anchorage on the north side of Caldy Island - Priory Bay - opposite Tenby with its sailing club.

When I had a 22ft boat I not would have made anywhere near Caldy. I would leave at least 2 hours before HW. Then sail down the back eddy along Penarth beach and stay tight along the coast past Barry. When the tide turns, head out and sail to Oxwitch bay. Even for that I would need a good sail, I stay out of Swansea bay, as the turn of the tide can trap you in there.

In a 23 footer there really isnt much point in even trying to leave more than an hour before High Water - you will simply get stuck / make very slow progress against the tide as you approach Lavernock. But then the trip up the irish sea in a 23 footer isnt going to be a picnic either.

Your best answer is to use a truck and enjoy the boat when you get her home. I've done the Irish sea several times in a 39 footer and its been hard work on every occasion.

I have seen someone doing the penarth beach eddy at hw-2, he made better progress than me. Is it also an advantage hugging the coast around sully and into the bay at barry?

I have used the eddies and slack water all the way down that part of the coast. On springs I go inside Sully island and stay in the bay by the hospital. On one occasion my GPS and log said exactly the same distance as I past Jacksons bay, despite passing Penarth pier over two hours before HW.

I'm Allan, inside of Sully has over 2m over drying out at low tide. I take !.4m and have never had a problem.

Hi Allan,
Anymore guidance on passing inside Sully Island? I had a good look at the causeway when the tide was out recently and there are some horrendous rocks sticking up on the ridge that joins the land to the island. From memory it looked like choosing a path mid way between the island and the mainland was the best approach.

I honestly can't see the point in going inside Sully, its just another risk and not saving a massive amount of time. Although we did go through there full pelt in the Balmoral in the dark a few years ago! Also I have anchored in the east side a few times which was ok.

if your trying to maximise the eddy out of cardiff it probably helps. I did this last friday.

I left at HW-2 heading for Milford so wanted to make as much of the tide as possible. I hugged the coast along penarth beach, then cut close in at Lavernock point. I then hugged the coast to sully island. I only really got slowed a bit at lavernock as I rounded the corner. .i chickened out of going inside at Sully and did get slowed by a few knots (off my 5kt log speed) going around sully. So going through would have save 10min or so. Nothing great but it all helps
