Anyone got any opinions on a good place for a complete sailing novice to get some lessons around the Leeds area?

Haven't decided for certain yet so a lesson or two might help me make up my mind /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

cripes i can't think of anywhere in Leeds, or even near Leeds, and never ever saw or knew anyone with a boat in W Yorks. Sailing and boats is for rich southern gits so the nearest boats to you will be rowing boats on the Nidd at Knaresboro.

If you google for RYA and Yorkshire you find several clubs tho most inland and dinghy sailing.

The only boats in West Yorkshire are Gravy Boats to out on't pie & chips and mushy peas.

Actually I think they have saily boaty things on Scammonden Dam just by the M62 at Outlane (Huddersfield) and I even think that I have seen dinghys on Yeadon Tarn next to the airport.

However, your best bet is to get in your car and have a very nice hours drive to the Lake District, you can even go on Windermere without any fear of being frightened by those nasty fast stinkpots.

Oops and I've just remembered that about one mile from where I live there is a sailing club on the Ouse north of Naburn Marina on the Bishopthorpe side by the old railway bridge on Acaster Lane. I know that this is upmarket North Yorks but if you tell them you are a sailor (dont mention the Fletcher) they will probably let you in.

Hey /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif ....

As a kid I learnt to sail in a mirror on the moors of Halifax at a club called Fly Flat. It was good fun but very cold. At the time I wasn't much interested in racing which p'd alot of the members off especially when doing the course backwards.

Anyway to answer the question for dinghy sailing yes loads of places, but can't remember where as I'm a Southern softy now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes I'm a Halifax lad myself. If I remember it was on a reservoir, I think actually only a few miles from Scammonden but before the dam was built. Was there also a glider school up there?

Pugneys - J39 M1. Council owned puddle with dinghys and wind surfers.

HOTA - Hull. For jumping into cold water in the dark and playing with lifejackets and liferafts.

Hull Marina - bound to be a few 'Sea Schools' with keel boats for Competent Crew etc.

Sorry Meddreamer. Near Hebden Bridge was a gliding place. Off that Studley Pike. Arrr..... Halifax where the fights were friendly and the beer was always cold.

Your nearest option is probably Yeadon Sailing Club, Yeadon Tarn, Yeadon, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS19 6, Tel: 0113 239 1258. Alternatives are Ripon Sailing Cub (nearer Knaresborough) & West Riding Sailing Club @ Wakefield - if you don't readily feel the cold you could try Grimwith Resevoir - somewhere in the clouds between Pately Bridge & Grassington!
If you fancy something colder still try Bob Moncur Sailing (Hartlepool) - I think they'll provide a w/e taster on the briny

If it is big boat sailing then there was an advert in last Sats YPost for Bridlington - sec@ryyc.org.uk - 01262 422062.

For little boat sailing then Pugneys, as mentioned above, is your best bet - although get well immunised before you start /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
