Hello there

We're in the process of buying a Southerly 105. We had a test sail and survey recently and discovered pretty much all the windows leak (thankfully it rained!).

I understand leaky windows is a common problem for Southerly owners. I'm just wondering if anyone could offer some advice in relation to solving this issue? The boat is a 1979 build so would it be worth having the windows taken out and reinstalling them from fresh? The seals around the windows don't look the prettiest after years of more and more sealant being added.

If anyone has had their windows resealed, what kind of cost does this involve? Any info would be useful in order to know what will need to be done and negotiate the final purchase price!

Thanks!

Southerly windows

I have a similar problem with my 1992 build 100.

I have removed the windows complete with frame and resealed frame to hull. This has not been fully successful. Reduced the leak but I now believe that there is also leakabe at the glass to frame seal so will have to do it all again! Bit of a pain but one lives and learns (hopefully).

This I realise is not really helpful to you but would advise do not go for a short cut. I should have gone down my usual route of do it properly do it once!

Hadlow Marine Excellent Service For Window Refurbishment

The windows on my Rival 41C, 1973 (I think) are leaking. I have been using Hadlow Marine Services at www.yachtwindows.co.uk 01732 851 309

Basically I remove a pair per month, send down to Hadlow and get refurbished windows back. The process involves splitting the frames, renewing the fish plates, cleaning the frames, sealing the glass and applying a bedding tape to the outside flange.

The bedding tape is tops; the window is offered up to the hull and screwed down effecting a perfect seal without any mastic. The tape also fills slight irregularities.

The cost for one 700 mm x 200 mm windows is £58.05.

Hadlow Marine have delivered a great service. If you use bedding tape and the window is screwed to the GRP, you will need 3 mm longer screws, this being the thickness of the bedding tape.

I,ve found "Flexistrip" to be excellent. Its a non setting butyl tape about 5/8th wide. Its what glazing firms use for conservatorys etc.It has a 20yr g/tee.Its a doddle to apply. When you tighten the frame it oozies out and you just need a piece of wood (one half of a clothes peg is ideal).Costs about £6.for about 20metres.
