Hi
A friend is having a problem with a persistant leak in or around the stern tube, one of the opinions being pushed around at the moment is that the stern tube is fractured / damaged, what is the likel hood of this any ideas ???

Ignore LakeSailor.....he's either escaped from the Lounge or theyve chucked him out.....no matter !!!

Re the leaky problem I would suggest some careful and methodical investigation. Should be possible to narrow down just where the water is leaking in one way or another. Logical first option would be the stern gland where a little leakage is perfectly normal. If its more than a little is the packing in need of renewal or whatever? Could tighten gland right up to stop normal drips and see if water still seeping in in which case must be elsewhere.
Not saying cant be a fractured or damaged sterntube but eliminate the easy/obvious/simple stuff first.

ahhhh.....here come the white coats to collect LakeSailor........

2 part stern tube???

Hi
It's a Catamaran, and this is the 3rd time she has been lifted in as many weeks,
some minor hull damage has been repaired by the boatyard, and subsequently another fault found and repaired, on the second lift out. This time however nothing tangible can be found, the actual stern gland has been checked and found to be fine, so no apparent problem, this I guess is where the damaged stern tube theory, is coming from.
It has also been mentioned that the stern tube is in two parts with an inner seal somewhere, that suggestion raised a few eyebrows, but nobody really knows for sure if this is the case! I would have thought that unlikely any ideas?

Re: 2 part stern tube???

Just to confound you.
If it's certainly not the gland and the leak is really coming from that area (and not coming from above) then to save the cost and hassle of keeping lifting it out, the best option is to bite the bullet and replace the stern-tube.
A dear do, but could clear up the problem.

Now, arms in here?
