I started the engine today after doing too much work to fix a waterleak. I now have two new water leaks and an oil leak. There is a small (2-3mm.) hole in the casing of the engine water pump just below and behind the pully wheel. Does anyone know what this hole is for??

If I do not get a good reason for its existence it will get tapped and filled with a bolt tomorrow.

The other leak is from the rear of the jabsco seawater pump. When I started the engine I noticed that there was what appeared to be a rubber seal for the shaft visible in the slot between the rear of the pump and the engine. I pushed this seal back in place but it still leaks a little.

Is this seal easy to replace or is it a new pump job??.

The oil leak is sorted.( i think)

any help would be appreciated.

Tony.

Shaft seals often leak due to mis-alignment. Take care not to overtighten drive belts stressing alternator and waterpump bearings. Easy to diagnose once the belt is slackened off.
Take hold of the pulley and feel for play or bearing roughness.

An exchange pump from your local car parts supplier may be available if you know which car engine its based on.

the nole is to allow leaking water out of the pump, if it's kept inside firstly you won't know it leaking, secondly if it's fitted to the timing cover (checked profile but couldn't see what engine you use) it may leak into the engine oil.

if the seal has been displaced it should be renewed, check your local bearing suppliers, they will match it up for you.

find out what caused the seal to be pushed out. it could have been incorrectly fitted or could have been pushed out by pressure in the crankcase. again this will depend on the type of engine/pump fitment.

good luck.

Thanks for the help.

The engine is a perkins 4108.

The seawater pump is fitted to the crankcase but is cam driven so I think it must have been displaced or dried out during lay up.

The engine cooling pump is belt driven bit is not fitted to crankcase.

I think a trip to town with a pump under each arm is called for.
