Leaking petrol can

I have bought a typical 12 litre petrol can (similar to photo attached) to top up the main tank on my tender.

The fuel however leaks out through the fuel line connection spigot when carried/stored without any fuel line attached.

I may be naive but cannot believe that it is normal.

Am I doing something wrong or should there be way of closing off the spigot?

Thanks on advance.

There would normally be a fuel line/hose permanently fitted, with a self closing connector on the end.
Some tanks have a self-closing connector and use a line with connectors each end.

As well as the connectors nromally used on outboards, there are various self-closing connectors used on some motorbike tanks..

Or you could just close the spigot with a length of hose with and 8mm bolt or bit of rod stuffed in the end.

It is not intended for use as a can for the purchase, transport or storage of petrol. It is intended to be a fuel tank for an outboard engine for example.

If you are not using it as a fuel tank you could remove the outlet fitting and seal the hole with a threaded plug but it probably falls short of the requirement that it should be possible for petrol to be poured safely from it.
