The charge air cooler on my volvo tamd 31 is leaking water & oil from a small hole in the bottom of it. Can anyone tell me why it is doing this & how do I fix it. All suggestions gratefully received.

There is a small weep hole in the bottom of the CAC to drain water that may have condensed in the bottom of the unit. There may also be a small amount of oil there too as this can be drawn from the turbo charger as a mist particularly when the induction manifold is under vacuum, say while the engine is idleing.
It is a question of quantity though, it should only be a weep at the most. Water in any great quantity in the induction manifold will have disasterous results.

The quantity will vary due to humididty and sea water temperature. On humid days and cold sea water there could be quite a lot of condensation to drain from the air chamber.

I wouldn't like to say it's perfectly normal without knowing how much oil/water is leaking. A small amount is normal but there shouldn't be enough to collect in the bilge.

Is the boat used in salt water? If so is the water salty? Indicating an internal leak.

If a large amount of oil is present then this could indicate a faulty turbo or it may be from the crankcase breather pipe onto the air filter.

Or it may just be normal!

Yep...agreed. I was just pointing out that there can be natural reasons
for a normal wee leak becoming a normal bigger leak:)

thanks
