"I am in the back of beyond and my leaking water pump was removed by a local who said he could fix it, only to take it apart and disappear never ti be seen again. I need to put it back together and could do with some help. Have a look at the pics. It's on a DAF engine and belt driven.

Firstly, can anyone identify the pump? Secondly, could somebody talk me through reassembly - especially the seals and bearings that I should have - I think I am missing one or two....

If you can't get new bearings and the old ones aren't too rough I would just clean it up and make new gaskets with old chart paper and some hylomar if you have it and reassemble with fingers crossed!

Hmm looking at the pictures I would strongly recomend a new pump (if you can afford one) if not try a recon one from a decent scrap yard?

I wish you good luck and sorry to hear your dilema.

I cannot see much that helps identification in your photos. Ball bearings are easy to identify, they will almost always have a part number engraved or stamped in one end of the outer ring. Lip seals are identified by size, the best way to find a replacement is to take them to a local seals and bearings supplier. Your photos seem to suggest that yours are not this type, unless I am only looking at a carrier for them.

When you say 'back of beyond', is it somewhere that seal and bearing suppliers don't exist?

John: it's not often we see Vyv stumped, although I doubt that gives you any pleasure.

Still, bearings are pretty universal, often the more so in places where things are fixed rather than thrown away. There must be stockists in the country, and you won't need much Albanian to show someone the old bearings and seals.

Is it a Desmi

It looks as though it's a single stage turbine or side-channel pump, the commonest makes I'm aware of are "SIHI" and "Sterling". We use them at sea for both sea and fresh water services, albeit normally 2 or 3 stages.
SIHI's website will let you download pdf brochures website if you go to the "literature" link - the rest of the links seem to take you to an enquiry form, although that may also help you.

Ah! Just googled "sterling pumps".... Seems they are now sterlingSIHI. :o Just shows how old this barge is!

I realise that the pumps here have a minimum of two impellers and yours seems to have only one, but I hope the info helps.

isn't that a plain centrifugal pump ? If so, then apart from cleaning up the internal surfaces, and making sure that the mating surface are tidy and have a good gasket seal, then the bearings are the only issue. (Assuming input and out pipes are clear).

Bearings are best dealt with taking to a bearing supplier, or doing lots of careful measurements and internet purchase.

Likely to be fiddly, but it's basic engineering after a good clean. It almost looks as if there should be two rotors; one at the front and one at the back.

From the condition of the pulleys (rusty) can one safely presume that the ngine has not run for some time ?

Repair completed

Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement. I eventually found a great place to have the whole thing restored - turbo servis in Uzice, Serbia. It did involve a very long drive, and the usual entertaining discussions with customs officials who expected palms to be laced....
