I crew on a Bavaria that has a leaking seal on the large screwcap on the top of the cold water tank. Three repairers have had various attempts, including silicon sealant and the latest brilliant attempt which appears to be a cork floor tile cut into a circle :ambivalence:

The lid looks to be an off-the-shelf item like a larger version of the cap that you get on the 25 litre home-brew bottles. Anyone know where I can get the seal or the spec so I can sort out something that works?

You could try Clipper Marine. They have a lot of Bavaria parts and helped us out with obscure bits like light switches. They don't list the parts on their website but if you email them they may know the part number.

I don't know what 25l home-brew bottles look like, but is it perhaps a Whale TCL hatch?

Alternatively, Seals Direct do a range of neoprene "cord" in different sizes which can have the ends glued together to make large O-rings. I keep meaning to buy some to replace the seal in the old flare cannister we use for dry storage on the Contraption.

Thanks all, that Whale thingy looks remarkably like it, I'll investigate that route.

No luck with clippermarine, they had a newer design, same one as the piccie that pvb posted.

I use the neoprene cord for drive belts, the only issue with them is that you weld them with a soldering iron and you can't get the interface smooth afterwards. I use similar designs of lids in some machinery we build and they are absolute barstewards for leaking with the slightest imperfection in the bottle neck, lid or o-ring.

I have the same problem and as a temporary measure have used 3 layers of cling film and it seems to work. I only remove the cap once a year for water treatment so it is not a permanent fix.

I don't recall there ever being a washer or O ring and the problem just appeared from nowhere. Perhaps other can advise their actual experience. I assume your cap is black like mine. I would like to effect a permanent fix so will monitor this thread.

I had a similar problem on my Bav 46... if you fill the tank to absolutely full, the tank bulges a bit and when in a sea way, will spill a certain quantity in the bilges.

The seal is important! I found seals at a hardware store in Majorca and bought a few then.

We have a different boat now.

And the winner is...

four layers of cling film :encouragement: Take a bow, Brian,

I've now got measurements and pictures of the offending seal, I'll keep looking and post any permanent solution I come up with,

I think I have a solution. An IBC cap from

http://shop.smithsofthedean.co.uk/ibc-lid---blank-150mm-11-p.asp

looks good and I've bought one. However Brians non-permanent cling film solution survived the Scuttlebutt cruise (pretty lumpy I can assure you) so I don't want to take the old one off to check :ambivalence:

So currently we might have a solution but I'll let you know when the 'temporary' repair gives up the ghost.
