The characters on my 15 year old depth sounder have been dissapearing over the last few years. Before I replace it I was wondering if anyone knew how to restore the LCD screen.

LCD

Some Instruments do have an option to play with the contrast which allows you extend the lifespan. But otherwise there is no way to DIY fix that. The stuff between the plates is organic and deteriorates over time and UV. Also, in case there is even a tiny breach in the seal it dramatically speeds up the decay process :-(

LCD screen

Not necessarily disagreeing with jfkal but I would try removing the instrument to a dry warm place for a while. It may be just enough to dry it out. good luck olewill

If the LCD characters are getting feint then that sounds like deterioration and there is no cure. The contrast adjustment is a good one and even my little Apelco one had a knob to twiddle for that.

Failing that, do try drying it out, although if the damp is getting in, it will probably condense up again when put back on the boat.
