I am going to fit lazy jacks with a fixed stowage bag to my jaguar 25, my boat has a new Hood main with a great full shape, I know you can slacken the lazy jacks, but will the bag standing up from the boom affect the performance of the sail? The lazy jacks will be fitted to the bag and I am thinking of having some way of tying down the bag to reduce the upstand.

I would be most grateful for any opinions or advice.

Many thanks in advance.

No other change to a boat has the same cost/benefit improvement like lazyjacks! On ours we slacken off the lazyjacks until the 'bag' is loose and it doesn't get in the way of the air flow over the main. Obviously the lazyjacks themselves slightly affect the flow of air, creating turbulance. I have seen one local boat where they slacken them right off and attach them onto the boom; I know 10 tweaks that each give 0.01 knot make a tenth of a knot improvement, but if we were that worried about speed we wouldn't carry so much water for the shower!

We don't bother loosening the lazy jacks for the stackpack either ... I know of one stackpack system that has full length zips so you can remove the whole lot whilst sailing - probably better if you're doing more than just dayhops... otherwise it just isn't worth it.
I've always said for racing - you're far better learning how to sail properly than fine tuning the rig and sails because a well sailed badly tuned boat still goes faster than a badly sailed well tuned boat....

We've got a cleat on the shroud for the lazy jack line, with a loop in the line so to pack the bag tidily away I just lift off the loop from the cleat, bag goes slack then we can clip each side of the bag along the boom using the clips which the makers -Gowens thoughtfully included. No problem and boat looks tidy when we're sailing. Must admit we do it on passage more than day sailing tho!

My lazy jacks use bugee cord in the aftmost line. This is enough to hold the sail when it comes down, but has sufficient give so as to not affect the sail shape too much.

The system was supplied by Arun Sails.
