Hi. I have a lazy jack system. The sail is loose footed and has a metal slider at the clew, which slides in the boom slot. This is then followed by the lazy jack system sail bag slider bolt rope. So to remove the sail I have to remove the lazy jack sail bag first, which is a bit of a pain.
Question is, could I, with the right tool, simply grind out a wider opening in the top of the boom slot near the clew end so I can simply remove the sail slider by that, remove the tack and job done, leaving the sail bag in place.

Without weakening the boom of course is the critical point!

Probably not that well explained but I get the impression many systems are like this??

Or, remove the metal slug entirely Fromm the mainsail and secure the clew around the boom using a dyneema/webbing/velcro strap. Like any good Laser sailer will tell you ?

That's how I turned my main into a loose footed one when I first installed a home brew stackpack. It worked fine.

My new sail has a slug through a hole in the stakpak and I agree, it's a bit of a pain to take off, but I normally only get mad at it when taking the sails off for the winter and putting them back on in spring, so I'm taking the pak off anyway.

Why do you want to leave the sail bag/ lazy jack system up? Compared to removing the sail the sail bag is pretty easy
We have a similar system but the sail is shackled to the slug at the aft end of the boom and to the reefing horn fitting at the forward end.

When we want to remove the sail we put sail ties round the sail and undo the shackles, remove the mast slugs, then release the lazyjacks and drop the sail on the deck.

Perhaps you could change the slugs to allow this?
