In my own quest to find out prices for laying up our boat I've set up a spreadsheet to try to get to the bottom of who is the cheapest. The yards out there don't make it easy for you...Do they?

Some have Winter packages, other charge per meter per month, others per metre per day, then there are those who charge per metre per week. Some have discounts for early payment, others don't.

It's a real mind melter.

I've got prices for (cheapest first):
Emsworth
Trafalgar (with deal)
Wilsons Boat Yard
Deacons
Gosport Boat Yard
Quay Lane
Wicormarine
Camber Quay (1 Space available, but set lift in/out dates)
Port Solent
Gosport
Chichester
Berthon
Northney

But if anyone has any prices they want me to plug into it I can add them to the list

Cheapest at the moment is Emsworth Marina:
Winter Ashore for £115/m for six months, including lift out, unstep mast, wash-off, storage, step mast, launch.

Include cradle hire for £125/m for six months.
inc complimentary taxi service within a 20 mile radius of the marina.

Drivers Wharf, Southampton, nice people to deal with, Itchen Marine also nearby (primitive but I m told it's cheap).

It would be interesting to get a copy of your spreadsheet. Though I keep my own boat in Falmouth - in the course of business (brokerage) I sometimes need to find spaces to store yachts up for sale in the Solent. Usually because they are being sold by the executors of the owners estate, and some clubs don't like boats left there once owners have died.

We don't want your sort around here, sullying the new shower block!!;)

On a serious note, I was told this weekend that Emsworth is nearly full this winter so even the bertholders may not get space ashore. Of course that may be an effort to convince me to take my boat out :D

Are you sure you want to lay up for winter?

I've recently discovered that I can stay afloat (in Chi Marina) for within £50 of haul out/jetwash/hardstanding/re-launch at Wilsons (we're on a swinging/drying mooring there).

OK, the crane ops account for about 1/3rd of the winter package, so I might need to visit the Itchnor scrubbing piles...

Have you tried Portsmouth Marine Engineering (PME) - next to Trafalgar? I moor there but over winter at a sailing club so have not checked their winter charges.

Quite sure, we've kept her in for the last two season, and you're right there is about £40/months to keep her in the water. We still had to pay for a haul out to re anode/antifoul her.

If we could get away with it for a third year we would, but I have plenty of work to keep me busy on her and less time than I did have, so sadly she has to come out.

Ah - understood* - I'm looking forward to my first (in 6 years of ownership) winter afloat.

I'm probably OK with all the systems (engine, tankage, electrics, etc) side of things, but I think I'll fish my old genoa out of the loft ("good" main can stay on, right?) and maybe get in the habit of folding down & covering the sprayhood - I can never understand people that winter ashore with sails left on (even in stackpacks) and sprayhoods rigged.

At least I won't have to deal with a garage full of Fray Bentos this winter.

* http://www.wilsonsboatyard.co.uk/prices.html has prices for your spreadsheet

<makes note to stick winter washboard on and remember to bring normal one home for a bit of varnish/epoxy TLC>

Don't forget that Harbour dues are payable in Chi : applies if your boat is kept on a permanent mooring, in one of the marinas or if you are visiting for a week or just a day.

so if you are "visiting" for your liftout/on the hard then worthwhile checking with the marina what the situation is with regard to any requirement to pay Hdues.

Can you put the finished spreadsheet online? Folks could add to it for other areas, and upload it again - could be very useful.

Emsworth have a pretty good scrubbing grid. If you choose to stay afloat as we did last year (great place to just sit on the boat and chill out), one busy (muddy) day/weekend on the grid should be enough to re-anode and antifoul. Then you get to spend the rest of the time popping out for day sails or just enjoying pottering about on the boat in her natural habitat in a fabulously sheltered marina.

Granted you'll need a decent spring tide if you want to go out for more than a couple of hours but if you get it wrong you can always dive across to Northney for a night.

No connection, just a happy customer (who's already booked in!!:D)

Good point...and something for someone else to look into I think :D

The problem is that it's a complex spreadsheet done in a very simple manner. Sadly at the moment it's not just a case of filling in a few figures, although that will be my project for next year.

It really is a minefield, inc VAT/Ex VAT price by the foot Ex VAT, by the metre inc vat, some include scrubbing and block off others don't, just when you think you have all the combinations another yard turns up that charges one price between 28-33ft and another for 34ft+

If anyone has any links to prices I can add them in...eventually :)

Here's the list at the moment, but I make no promises that it's accurate, all for a 10M boat for 6 months ashore inc lift, scrub, block off, relaunch

For all the variety of pricing strategies it looks pretty competitive in the middle of the list.
