We are thinking of sailing our Tamarisk 24 along the Southern Irish coast this summer and rather than back-tracking were thinking of laying up for the winter (ashore or afloat) somewhere between Cork and Baltimore. Does anyone know or have experience of a yard that is sheltered, safe and not too expensive?

Yes indeed.
I live in Durrus (on the Sheep's Head) and have a mooring not far from Baltimore.
There's not a lot of boatyards around, but by far the best is where I've chosen to layup this winter:

It's not far from Baltimore, and near Schull.
Nice and sheltered too.
Access is on the high waters, but with a Tamarisk any high will do, springs or neaps.

There's loads of cruising to be done in this area, around all the islands.

I bet, having got here, you'll stay longer than just over winter /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Ron,
Well there's Bantry Bay Sailing Club.
They have a small yard and clubhouse the other side of the road from the public slip, right next to Bantry House.
Members only of course, and there's no club trailer/gantry/tractor or anything like that, so you'd have to make some arrangement with another member.
I wouldn't recommend the moorings off there, certainly not in the winter, as it gets pretty choppy when the wind blows from the NW.

Glengarriff is sheltered enough to layup afloat, and I'm certain you'd find a mooring there. There are public moorings of course, but they overhaul them during the winter so can't be used for laying up.
You'd have to ask around. It's all very laid-back here.

People who might be worth contacting in that area are:

It's a very well run sailing school in Adrigole, and they have all the local low-down on laying up places.
Generally it a matter of asking in the local pub for someone who's got a field/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

But maybe better still, especially if you want to layup afloat, is a lovely marina on Bere Island.
It's on Bantry Bay and is one of the best sheltered harbours on the west coast.

Hope this helps.
