Law in other countries

By "Bar" you don't mean "Beer Bucket" do you?

BTW. Supermarkets like AB are still breaking the law because they only give you the bill AFTER you have paid. The new Greek law requires that you receive a bill BEFORE you have ANY obligation to pay. Notices explaining this must also be displayed in the premises. The bloke in the marina "supermarket" still stacks his takings on the counter without putting them into the till or offering a receipt.

No it's not a beer bucket it's a Greek bar & cafe, and nothing like the Beer Bucket in Kontokali. ;)

500ml beer can be found cheaper in town here but this is a tourist town, the Two Brothers (not it's real name but that's what we all call the bar) is right outside the marina, close to the beach and it has a lovely view over the marina and the bay. We do get free gyros with the beers though (the tourists don't), lots and lots of it too. It's a popular place for lunch for marina people, a couple of beers and more than enough lunchtime grub for free. But then the afternoon is spent snoozing away in the cockpit. And what's wrong with that? :D

Know that bar well, won't go in there any more. Despite being in there many times with real locals from Ag Nik and Elounda, and with some of the marina crowd, we always got charged tourist prices even in winter when most people around aren't tourists. They seem very selective about who they will rip off and our faces seem to fit that mark.

They don't know you, that's all it is. The "marina crowd" are in there a lot and they quickly know who they are. New arrivals for winter are usually introduced to them as marina residents by people they already know.

In any case you can't really call it being ripped off, although you do winter here you're not marina residents. :)

Having one price for locals and another for tourists is ripping people off. We wouldn't stand for it in the UK, the price is the price. Maybe we're just too fair and expect others to be the same.

Happens all over the place and why shouldn't "regulars" get a discount? It is normal practice in the UK with store cards giving kickbacks to card holders. Our local club here in the marina with a bar open to all, has a cheaper price for members and sailing visitors, tourists pay more but we have to pay membership fees which they don't.

At the risk of thread-drift - there is one vary basic difference between Anglo-Saxon Common Law and that in most other countries; probably best summed up by the Deutsch dictum "Everything which is not expressly permitted is verboten..."

For us, happy breed, in this sceptred isle:- "if it's not forbidden it's allowed"
